the Faculty of Science’s
Committee for Student
Standing, which deals with
students’ academic appeals
as well as the faculty’s Local
Disciplinary Committee. This
indicates the high regard for
her among faculty members.
Bailey volunteers at the Gimli
Community Health Centre, at
Habitat for Humanity, and at
Betel in Gimli, where she helps
elders with technology. Her
Icelandic ancestry includes
Kristjana Stefanson, Wendy
Thordarson, Larry Arnason,
and Gordon Stefanson.
Gyda Naylor Memorial
Scholarship
Jessica Quennelle is from
Winnipegosis and is studying
at Brandon University in the
Faculty of Education Early
Years Program. Jessica has
volunteered or worked for
many organizations. She was
a Summer Literacy Program
leader for the Southwest
Horizon School Division,
a classroom volunteer at
Winnipegosis Elementary
School, a volunteer at the
YMCA before and after school
program, a camp counsellor
at Sagamace, and an assistant
instructor of Ukrainian dance.
At Brandon University, she
is a member of the Education
Student Society, president of
the residence council, and a
member-at-large for Brandon
University Women’s Collective.
One of Jessica’s references
described her as someone who
“consistently demonstrated that
she is a dedicated professional
in all areas presented to her.”
Skip and Margaret Skaptason
Memorial Scholarship
Coral Williams is a student
in the Food Science and Animal
Science Faculty studying
animal science with the goal
of becoming a veterinarian
specializing in pathology.
Over the past few years, Coral
has volunteered at Living
Sky Wildlife Rehabilitation,
Cumberland Veterinary Clinic,
Stonewall Veterinary Clinic,
and Centennial Veterinary
Clinic. From 2013 to 2015,
she was a peer advisor. This
year she applied for prestigious
research scholarships and
received both, although she
was only able to accept one.
As one of her references stated,
these awards are offered to top
caliber candidates. This same
reference described Coral as
having “a passion and scientific
capability for graduate studies
or veterinary medicine.”
Neil Bardal Scholarship
Tyler Koswin is currently
in the Faculty of Science
and his goal is to go on to
medical school to become a
psychiatrist. Tyler is a mature
student who has returned to
university to pursue his dream.
He is involved in a number of
Indigenous organizations such
as Neechiwaken Indigenous
Peer Mentor Program and
the University of Manitoba
Indigenous Homecoming and
Indigenous Orientation. He is
a member of the University of
Manitoba’s Indigenous Circle
of Empowerment leadership
program whose focus is to help
strong students develop their
leadership abilities. One of his
references wrote that Tyler “is
encouraging and entertaining,
and with his strong work ethic
he is an excellent role model.”
Tyler aspires to work in regions
with a high demographic of
Indigenous people. He believes
that mental health is integrated
with a person’s culture and
spiritual beliefs and his
understanding of an Indigenous
individual’s perspectives would
have immeasurably positive
impacts on their treatment.
Anna Skaptason Memorial
Scholarship
Selene Sharpe is a second-
year student in the Vocal
Performance Program at the
Desautels Faculty of Music.
She is a graduate of Kelvin
High School French Immersion
Program. Selene is a gold
medal winner (2013-2017)
in the Royal Conservatory of
Music’s voice examinations. At
the Winnipeg Music Festival,
she won the W.H. Anderson
Memorial Trophy in 2015 and
was the runner-up for the Alma
Wynne Memorial Trophy in
2018. Besides her musical
studies, Selene is an athlete
and currently a member of
Desautels Faculty of Music
Running Club. This year was
the second-place overall female
in the Manitoba Marathon. One
of her references describes
Selene as a Renaissance
woman of unlimited potential.
She is the great-granddaughter
of Stefan Jonasson Dalman and
Elin Gislason.
