Ísland er bara landið mitt. Ég hef hvergi viljað eiga
heima nema á Íslandi en ég hef farið til ýmissa landa. Ég
ólst upp á Snartastöðum í Lundareykjadal og var með
bú fyrir utan túngirðinguna og þar áttum við hús, kind-
ur og kýr. Svo var maður alltaf að tína krækiber. Maður
þurfti náttúrlega fljótt að fara að vinna eins og maður
gat en ég var fegin því að geta hjálpað foreldrum mín-
um. Ég átti góða foreldra. Ég var mikið fyrir að ferðast og
er Þórsmörk í uppáhaldi. Það er svo gott að vera þar. Þar
er bæði kyrrð og falleg náttúra. Það eru margir fallegir
staðir á Íslandi. Ég hlakka til vorsins og þó ég þoli núna
sólina illa þá er ég alltaf glöðust þegar vorið kemur. Það
eina sem okkur vantar eru ávextir á trén; ég vildi gjarnan
hafa ávaxtatré á Íslandi en það er víst of kalt til þess.
Iceland is simply my country. I have visited various coun-
tries and I have never wanted to live anywhere else. I was
raised on the farm Snartastaðir in the valley Lundarey-
kjadalur. I had a house with sheep and cows just outside
the family farm. We often picked crowberries. I was young
when I started working on the farm but I was happy being
able to help my parents. I had good parents. I loved to trav-
el and my favorite place has always been Þórsmörk. It´s so
nice being there. So much tranquility and nature is beau-
tiful. There are many beautiful places in Iceland. I always
look forward to spring and even though I don´t tolerate
the sun very well, I am always happiest when spring arrives.
The only thing we are missing on the trees here in Iceland
is fruits. I would love to have fruit trees here but I guess it is
too cold for that.

Ísland er heima. Ísland er snú snú með vinkonu minni
og ljósastaur á götuhorni í Hlíðunum. Ísland er bíltúr
með ömmum, spjall yfir pylsu og sjeik í Smáranum, bíó-
ferðir í Kringluna. Hljólreiðar í myrkum stormi og haglél:
„Afsakaðu kennari hvað ég er sein en hjólið mitt fauk.”
Bjartsýni og svartsýni. Birta og dimma. Víðátta og nánd.
Hugarfar sem breytist eftir veðri. Sundlaugar alla daga
vikunnar. Sjóðandi pottar, kaldir pottar og svo steikjandi
sólin þegar hún loksins birtist manni. Fólk tanað í óveðri.
Fjölskyldan. Vinirnir. Flugdrekakennsla með bróður mín-
um fyrir utan Hallgrímskirkju í roki. Ástin. Kraftmiklar
konur. Virkjanir. Stíflur. Mótmæli. Náttúra. Huldufólk.
Drekar og víkingar. Blámi og ský sem aðeins eiga heima
hjá okkur. Varalitur áður en farið er út í búð.
Iceland is home. It is jumping rope with my friend and a
light post on a street corner in the Hlíðar neighborhood.
Iceland is going for a ride with my grannies, talks over hot
dogs and milkshakes in Smárinn, cinema trips to Kringlan.
Riding my bicycle in the dark storming hale. “Sorry teacher
I’m late but my bike got blown away.“ Optimism and nega-
tivity. Light and darkness. Vastness and intimacy. Mindsets
that vary with the weather. Swimming pools every day.
Boiling hot tubs, freezing cold tubs and the hot sun when
it decides to show up. People tanned in a blizzard. Family.
Friends. Kite flying with my brother outside. Hallgrimskirk-
ja on a windy day. Love. Powerful women. Power plants.
Dams. Protests. Nature. Hidden people. Dragons and Vi-
kings. Blues and clouds that only live here. Lipstick before
you go to the shop.

Ísland er í mínum huga eitt fallegasta land í heimi og
er náttúran hér einstök. Það er yndislegt að ganga upp
á fjöll og geta baðað sig í náttúrulaugum að sumri til.
Ísland er fullt af náttúruperlum og get ég nefnt hvera-
svæðin sem mér þykir alltaf gaman að skoða. En Ísland
er líka fólkið sem þar býr, fjölskyldan og vinirnir og þau
eru það sem gerir Ísland að heimalandinu mínu. Ég hef
ferðast víða um heiminn en að lenda í Keflavík og aka
í gegnum hraunið í átt að Reykjavík – þá er ég komin
heim.
In my mind, Iceland is one of the most beautiful countries
in the world and with its unique nature. It’s wonderful be-
ing able to hike mountains and bathe in hot springs in the
summer. Iceland is full of natural wonders like the many
different geothermal areas which I always love to visit. Ice-
land is also the people who live there, family and friends.
They are the ones that make Iceland my home. I have trav-
elled to many countries but landing in Keflavík and driving
through the lava fields towards Reykjavik – then I feel like
I’m home.

Á Islandi tölum við íslensku og það er gaman á Íslandi.
Það er gaman á sumrin en ekki á veturna. Ísland er stórt
land og það eru ekki tígrisdýr á Íslandi.
In Iceland we talk Icelandic and its fun living in here. I love
the summers but not the winters. Iceland is a big country
and there are no tigers in Iceland.
