Winnipeg, MB: The Nordic Knitters semi-
monthly meetings at the Scandinavian
Cultural Centre end this month. 764 Erin St.
7 pm. Bring whatever project you’re knitting,
especially one that you might be having
difficulty with. Instructor Kelly Hinds. $5
per session, in support of L-H. All levels of
knitting expertise welcome.
SATURDAY 15 JUNE
Kvennahlaup will be held in three locations
in Manitoba the same day as Iceland.
Registration $25 and includes a t-shirt
from Iceland. Register TODAY to ensure

Markerville, AB: Icelandic National
Celebration – Íslendingamót. The Alberta
Clubs will celebrate together, the day
that the Republic of Iceland gained
Independence from Denmark. This year
we also celebrate the crowning of Calgary
Fjallkona, Barbara Sigurdson. Drive or take
the bus to Markerville Park and the Fensala
Hall. This is a rain or shine event. If it rains,
go to Fensala Hall.

10:30 am: load bus at the NAPA Auto
Supply, 730 – 16th Ave NW, with parking

we depart for Calgary.
8:00 pm: estimated time to arrive in
Calgary.

Bloomington, MN: Icelanders in the
Twin Cities will gather for their Icelandic
National Day festivities at Moir Park, 10320
Morgan Avenue South. Shelter 1, closest
to the north entrance at West 104th St.
and Morgan Ave. Registration for the 30th
annual Kvennahlaup begins and 10:30 am
and the Kvennahlaup will follow at 11 am.
Potluck lunch at 12:30 pm. Please bring a
dish to share; hamburgers and hot dogs
will be provided.
Los Angeles, CA: The Icelandic American
Association of Southern California will
host Þjóðhátiðardagur at Cheviot Hills
Recreational Center, 2551 Motor Ave.1 - 5
pm. Potluck, grill available.
Toronto, ON: Annual Icelandic Canadian
Club of Toronto's Icelandic National Day
Picnic. Grab your blankets and picnic
baskets. Join us for a celebration of
Þjóðhátíðardagurinn – Icelandic National
Day. The picnic this year will take place
in Dufferin Grove Park and will be for all
ages. Families are very welcome. This is
an informal event. Dufferin Grove Park
is located on Dufferin Park Ave. south of
Bloor, about two blocks south of Dufferin
subway station and across from the
Dufferin Mall. Bring: Blankets, chairs,
outdoor games, food, drink and snacks.
MONDAY 17 JUNE
Burnaby, BC: Iceland Independence Day
will be celebrated at the Scandinavian
Centre, 6540 Thomas St. 6 pm onwards.
This is a family event. There is fun for
the kids and lots of room for them to run
around while you visit. There will be hot
dogs, sinnep, remoulaði, steiktur lauker,
hangikjöt sandwiches, coffee, kleinur,
goodies, and a singalong. Please let us

New York, NY: Our annual Family
Midsummer Celebration returns,
celebrating the longest day of the year
Scandinavian-style. At this event, we'll
fashion flower wreathes, learn traditional
midsummer songs, and decorate the
maypole. All ages are welcome! Our
regular Children's Center programming
also continues for members through June
and July; the Center will be closed from
6 Aug through 4 Sep for renovations.

Icelandic Summer Camp. 55 spots open
for campers to have the experience of a
lifetime. For over 30 years Icelandic Camp
has been bringing youth of Icelandic
descent together to celebrate their shared
heritage. Over eight days the campers
are immersed in all things Icelandic.
From language lessons to viking crafts
to writing their own saga the campers
start to develop a love of their Icelandic

Begin. An exhibit of Viking-age collections
from the Uppsala University in Sweden.
American Swedish Institute, 2600 Park

dozens of early Viking artifacts from
Uppsala University in Sweden and its
museum, Gustavianum, which is home
to the world’s largest collection of Viking
and pre-Viking boat grave finds. Artifacts
include Viking helmets, swords and
other weapons, jewellery, glass, bowls
and more, dating as far back as the 7th
century. Divided into thematic sections
on Viking warfare, maritime trade, a ship
burial, Norse gods, the Baltic Sea, and geo-
political relationships to other cultures.

New York, NY: Our popular Summer Jazz
Series returns to Scandinavia House, with
performances from some of the most
talented young jazz musicians, composers,
and singers from the Nordic countries.
The series starts on 20 June with Sigmar
Matthíasson’s Áróra. Icelandic bassist
and composer Sigmar Matthíasson and
fellow performers perform music from
Matthíasson’s debut solo album Áróra and
other new compositions, which combine
jazz with different genres for powerful
and lyrical music results. 7:30 pm; Pre-
concert reception at 7 pm. $15 ($10 ASF
members). Series pass $60 ($40 ASF
members). This year’s performers include
Sigmar Matthíasson (Iceland), Mikkel
Ploug Trio (Denmark), Kari Ikonen Trio
