ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to examine the experience of being a parent of a child with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in Iceland. Four parents were interviewed and 112 parents answered a questionaire. The main results are that being a parent to an ADHD child is stressful and they are worried on behalf of their child. They tend to be depressed and have negative self-esteem as parents. Nevertheless, many have a positive attitude towards being a parent of an ADHD-child. There seems to be a similarity between the experience of parents of hyperactive children and the experience of parents of handicapped children. Diagnosis has positive effects on parents and their cooperation with school staff. The parents' experience of school and preschool varies but more parents have positive than negative experience.
