Shear wave velocity in surface sediments
OPEN DATABASE ON THE INTERNET
A special database structure for storing measured and
processed SASW data from the Icelandic sites has
been created. At present, data for almost 100 profiles
is stored on the webpage (www.hi.is/∼bb/sasw). The
objective of the database is to enable people working
in engineering and geological disciplines to make use
of these measurements for planning, design and re-
search. Four levels of information are stored in the
database:
(1) Area information including area map showing all
locations and general description.
(2) Location information including site map (Fig-
ure 9) showing all profiles and description of ground
conditions.
(3) Profile information including GPS coordinates,
date of measurements, depth to rock and ground wa-
ter, geophone layout used (Figure 4), USCS soil clas-
sification. This detailed information is not available
in all cases.
(4) Test results in form of experimental and theoretical
dispersion curve in one plot (Figure 7a); shear wave
velocity as function of depth in another plot (Figure
7b); table values for the theoretical shear wave veloc-
ity profile; and finally the average shear wave velocity.

Borgarfjarðarbrú
Figure 9. Example of a location map. The area around the Borgarfjörður bridge (Borgarfjarðarbrú) in west
Iceland (Figure 1) where ten SASW profiles were measured in 1996. Profiles B1, B2, B3 and B4 are on em-
bankments, B8 and B9 on road shoulders, and B5, B6, B7 and B10 are on natural sites. Sites B5, B6 and B7
are at shallow seawater depths and only accessible during low tide. – Dæmi um staðarkort. Kortið sýnir svæðið
umhverfis Borgarfjarðarbrúna á Vesturlandi þar sem tíu SASW mæliferlar voru mældir árið 1996. Ferlarnir
B1, B2, B3 og B4 eru mældir á leiðigörðum við brúarendana, B8 og B9 eru mældir á vegöxlum, og B5, B6,
B7 og B10 eru mældir á óhreyfðum náttúrulegum mælistöðum. Ferlar B5, B6 og B7 eru teknir á sjávarbotni á
grunnsævi sem er aðgengilegur á háfjöru.
