HEIMSKRINGLA
7. SÍÐA
the heat of ten summers in Mani-
toba and North Dakota turned
father’s attention toward a more
temperate climate. But his
thoughts dwelt in the west, not!
the south. This prompted him to
seek reliable information re-
garding various places bordering j
on the Pacific Ocean. He gath-
ered considerable informaiton
from various quarters during our
last winter in the east. A glow-
ing description of the city of
Victoria, B. C., its surroundings
and climate, attracted his atten-
ion beyond all oher described re-
ions in the west. This was one
°f the deciding factors that
prompted us to pull up stakes
and move to that extolled city
on Vancouver Island.
When we left Pembina, North
Dakota, in the early spring of
1887, its main street (Cavalier
street) resembled a deep gorge,
having high banks of shoveled
snow on both sides. This was
not an unusual sight after a
heavy snowfall, but at that time
of year it was rare. The same
conditions existed in Winnipeg
and Brandon, nowhere did v/e
see a patch of ground free from
snow until we reached Medicine
Hat, 660 miles west of Winni-
peg. There a sight greeted us
that I shall long remember. Half
of the town on the east side was
white with snow, while its west-
ern portion was light green with
lush growth. Then, as we travel-
led at a slow speed westward,
vast water-covered areas came
into view. These tracts were dot-
ted hei^ and there with emerald
green islets of grass. In some
regions the submerged areas
stretched out fartker than tbe
eye could see. These water-cover
ed regions, almost a day’s
journey in extent, were literally
covered with wild ducks—mil-
lions of them, when they took
wing, they darkened the sun. j
When we reached the foothills
of the Rocky Mountains I saw
a number of antelopes serveral

times scampering over near-by
hills—a familiar sight in various
regions of North Dakota. It was
now almost the end of a perfect
day. When I awoke early next
morning, we were in the Canad-
ian Rockies, where a raging
snowstorm greeted us. But we
soon pulled out of it into clear
weather. Shortly after this the
train stopped in fron of a brand- [
new three-story hotel, painted
dark green. It stood a short
disance west of a high mountain.
which was almost perpendicular
on the side facing the railroad;
for this reason it may have seem-
ed much higher than it really is
but standing beneath it, its lofty
peak towered against the sky.
This mountain, if I remember
right, was called Kicking Horse. I
In the vicinity of the hotel I
espied a Chinaman, the first I
had ever seen. But from there on, j
the Chinese became a frequent
spectacle; and to me, at that
time, notable they were indeed, |
because they seemed exactly a- j
like in appearance, as if cast in
the’same matrix.
We travelled at a very slow
rate through the Rockies arid
coastal rangé because the road j
was practically new, with many j
grades and curves to negotiate. j
The scenery in various places
was superb; I had never seenI
anything that compared with it
in grandeur. Several spots, from;
the Selkirk mountains to the
Cascade range, took my fancv j
as being ideal dwelling places. [
But that was before we reached j
the coast, which, to me, re-.
sembled an earthly paradise.
Although incorporSted early j
in 1886 as the coming terminal j
city of the Canadian Pacific j
railway, Vancouver could still
not be reached by rail. We board-
ed the steamboat, that plied be-
tween Victoria and Vancouver,
a Port Moody. It called at Van-
couver on its way out. Vancouv-
er was then in truth a bleak-look
ing town, for it bore deep scars
from the great fire ,of the year
before. (to be continued)
