eeland. In every group there
has been some silent and un-

obtrusive “immigrants,” to
whom customs authorities
paid not the slightesf atten-
tion, — no, not the family
ghosts — “fylgjur” — but
good companions, tried and
true. The books that each
family had cherished could
not be left behind on such a
journey.
An old Icelandic habit per-
sisted in many homes in the
new country. The whole
household spent the winter
evenings together. One person
would read aloud from the
sagas and any other books
then available, while the
audience worked at various
handcrafts. Thus my father
used to read to his family
while my mother plied her
knitting, and the three chil-
dren were close by. The
atmosphere was one of com-
plete attention — the outside
world offered no intrusion.
As soon as possible my father
gently but firmly had me také
my turin at the reading, some-
times pleading that his eyes
needed rest. Then, to close the
evening, he read a short de-
votional. During Lfent this al-
ways included one of the re-
vered Passion Hymns. On
Sundays at home, he would
read a sermon from the
famous Bishop Vidalin.
Years later I came to realize
what an impressive method
this had been of teaching
language and literature. For
my lasting joy therein, I feel
deeply indebted to a certain
unobtrusive “Interlude of Old
Books.”
At an early date each Ice-
landic community organized
its reading club — “lestrar-
félag.” Books were brought
from the homeland and cir-
culated over and over. In the
course of time a fairly reþre-
sentative library was to be

ávallt á milli 31. júní og 1.
júlí. Þessir tveir dagar eru í
rauninni utan við dagatalið og
gegna ákveðnum tilgangi eins
og augljóst er. Eins og af
þessu. sést, ber aðfangadag
jóla ávallt upp á sunnudag,

may find refuge in the librar-
ies of the new homeland.

Joy, or sorrow's troubled ocean

má e. t. v. segja, að það sé
ekki að allra ósk hér á landi.
Fyrir hina hjátrúarfullu er
það nokkur huggun, að engan
föstudag ber upp á 13. Marz,
júní, september og desember
hafa 30 daga, allir hinir mán-
uðirnir 31 dag.
Ekki má rugla þeessu tíma-
tali saman við Heimstíma-
talið (The World Calender),
sem frú Elizabeth Achelis
samdi og hefir legið fyrir
Sameinuðu þjóðunum til at-
hugunar. Því hefir nú alger-
lega verið hafnað.
Menn geta nú velt því fyrir
sér, hvort þeir geta fallizt á
tillögu þessa. Það er augljóst,
að þetta dagatal yrði til mik-
illa þæginda, ef allar þjóðir
tækju það upp. Ef svo yrði
mundi sama dagatalið gilda
frá ári til árs, eins og áður
kom fram, og er það eitt út af
fyrir sig mikill kostur. Senni-
lega verður aldrei hægt að
semja neina tillögu um breyt-
ingar á tímatalinu, sem ekki
hefir einhverja smágalla, eins
og til dæmis þá, að sumir
mundu telja það galla, ef af-
mælisdag þeirra ber alltaf
upp á mánudag eða þjóðhátíð-
ardag upp á sunnudag. Úr
þessu verður ekki bætt, nema
með sérstökum einkaráðstöf-
unum. Þannig mætti t. d. gefa
frí næsta dag eftir slíkan
þjóðhátíðardag, eins og Banda
ríkjamenn gera ávallt, ef 4.
júlí, þjóðhátíðardag þeirra
ber upp á suiinudag.
