the teas, ineluding a kitchen
range costing $1000, carpets,
drapes and other furnishings
that add to the beauty and
comfort otf the Homes and
grounds. From that source
came $5000 towards the cost
of planting trees around
Betel at Selkirk.
The Betel Foundation con
tinues to enjoy the whole-
hearted support of the Ice-
landic community. In work-
ing for its welfare, the found
ers were of one mind, leav-
ing not a murmur of strife
or contention to echo down
the years. Not the least of
all that they accomplished is
the solid tradition of selfless
service, unity and strength
they built as t'hey went a-
long.
That tradition has surviv-
ed in good health for 60 ye-
ars. The people who inherit-
ed the tasks and responsi-
bilities have worked with a
unity of purpose, and the
foundation’s board of direct-
ors still attracts men and
women of strength and visi-
on. They keep abreast of
the times tackling current
problems and shouldering
new ones as they arise.
The directors now see a
pressing need for a Betel
Home in Greater Winnipeg,
and have worked hard to-
ward the establishment of
such a home for the past
year. There now remains
one stumbling block. So far
they have not been able to
obtain permission to proceed
with the project from the
Manitoba Minister of Health
and Social Services and the
Manitoba Health Services
Commission. In his rep>ort to
the Board of Directors at its
annual meeting on May 4th
the retiring chairman urged
his successor and the board
to continue the struggle-

JUNE, THE YEAR'S PRIZE PACKAGE
June has come and will soon be gone, for that is the way
of fleeting time. This is the prize package of the seasons,
tucked into the middle of the year and all too small- Yet it’s
so good to be alive these days, that sometimes one feels,
that in all fairness, the summer should last forever and
forget to leave the land at least one year in each human
lifetime.
That hasn’t happened, though, in man’s recorded history
on these prairies. So why don’t we move to some seasonless
summerland in this vast country of ours that has something
for everybody?
Ah, but our seasons are a tantalizing lot, in all thedr
temperametal nonsense, tantrums and aggressive struggles
for possession of the sod long after their leases expire. April
you know, is supposed to usher in Spring. Her job is to boot
Winter in the butt, bring out the crocuse and scatter dandeli
ons like drops of sunshine on grey lawns. But not over the
dead body of blustering March can she get away with it.
He is Winter’s staunch supporter, that scoundrel, and more
lion than lamb. He manages to blow snow in April’s face for
at least two weeks of her tenure. So much for the terms of
peaceful possession written on the calendar. This leaves
April’s unfunished business to May, and it takes her at least
half of her 31 day to catch up and cosy up the amosphere
for June. We poor mortals wait on tenterhooks wondering
if we’re going to have spring before we get summer. Tenter
hooks, by the way, are sharp, hooked nails for stretching
cloth on a frame. Thats the kind of tension we suffer while
our seasons play fast and loose with our patience.
These tantrums do delay Summer, but grumbling is
out af season in June. Suspense is the spice of life, after all,
and now that the year has brought us what we’ve been
waiting for, it’s good to be alive. The grass is green and soft
under foot and the stately trees along old city boulevards
join their leafy limbs across the sidewalks, shedding downy
fluff like confetti on the passer by. This fluff is all that is
left of the tassels they wore in spring — their cast—off
ornaments falling on our heads as the leaves will fall come
autumn.
The lilacs are out in purple bloom, and it’s commonly
known that they ought to be picked by the armful for their
own good and for the good of the picker, who has waited
all year for the sight and smell of them. This, they say, is a
generous tree that just keeps blooming and bloming to keep
up with the demand until the season calls a ha'lt. Good luck,
then, to the uninhibited who steal lilacs in broad daylieht
and in the dark of night. They’re benevolent sinners whose
wayward deeds reap rich rewards for their hungry senses-
The small birds who have chirped away for nearly
three months about plans and projects, are now getting
down to serious business. Their discordant chatter has
changed into a harmony of song and toil and they’re so en
raptured of life and love that they suspect no one of evil,
not even people. They just perk cockily on a person’s garden
spade, waiting with open beaks for nice plump worm to be
unearthed. ,
Summer is too short and grows shorter with every pass
ing day. We long to drink deep of its delights while it last,
but most of us must take the heady nectar too infrequently
and in tiny measure. Few but the farmers, the fishermen,
the wild creatures and grazing cows may spend the sunny
days of summer with the green earth and blue skies. Caught
in traps of our own making, the rest of us pass the sunlight
hours behind c^osed doors. dreaming and scheming like
small children who in some ungarded mioment might
throw caution to the wind and play hookey. C.G.
