decision. He claimed that
three men, Mr. J. Bildfell,
Asmundur Johannsson and
Rognvaldur Petursson were
to blame for the accusations
against the committee. Ever
since they had learned of a
possible move to Gimli, they
had tried everything to
prevent it being discussed.
They had, before this
meeting started, tried with
all their might to have
people vote against the
move. He finally pointed out
that it had never been easy
for the committee to break
even financially, sometimes
its members were forced to
pay bills out of their own
pockets.
Motions
Mr. Fred Swanson moved
and A. Paulson 'seconded
that the í'ieeting permitted
the comndttee to proceed
with the preparation for the
1932 festival in whatever
place the committee
favoured. G. P. Magnusson
did not find this motion
satisfactory. The purpose of
this meeting was to
determine whether to go to
Gimli or not, he said.
S. B. Benediktsson moved
and Jon Jonatonsson
seconded that the meeting
supported the move to Gimli
Park that summer.
Votes were then taken
and fifty favoured the move,
thirty-five opposed it.
The festival at Gimli,
August 2, 1932, was quite a
success. More people at-
tended than ever before.
Those who had felt the
Winnipeg festival was never
Icelandic enough could
certainly not complain this
time. People of Icelandic
descent outnumbered non-
Icelanders by far.
Ever since that year,
1932, the “Islen-
dingadagurinn” has been
celebrated at Gimli and
today no-one regrets the
move from Winnipeg.
