THE ICELANDIC PEOPLE
WEPE REPRESENTED
AT THE BETTENDORF,
IOWA FOLK
FESTIVAL,
BUT NOT BY
ICELANDERS
LaDonna Breidfjord
Backmeyer
On June 14th and 15th, the
city of Bettendorf, Iowa held
its fourteenth annual folk
festival. This year, because
of a small group of students
from the University of
Ilinois, Champaign-Urbana,
'■ Iceland was represented at
the festival. These students
j were not Icelandic, nor
5 were they of Icelandic
-i descent. They were
members of the Cultural
Awareness Council, a
council that was created for
the purpose of helping
people become more aware
of the heritage of other
people, as well as of their
personal heritage.
The group from the
University of Illinois was
represented by Mary
Walters and Dale Sch-
meisser, and the room that
these two decorated with
Icelandic artifacts drew a
great deal of interest from
the people of the area and
from the media. Icelandic
sweaters and lava pottery
were tastefully displayed,
as were the arts of batik and
calligraphy. A papiermache
volcano loomed large within
the room and the posters on
the walls detailed, in part,
the history of Iceland and
the geography of Iceland.
Other posters portrayed the
Icelandic people, both their
past and their present. And,
as always, the literature
and the literacy of the
people were stressed. It was
quite obvious that Mary and
Dale had studied a great
deal. It was also apparent to
me, a person of Icelandic
heritage, that they had an
active interest in the
country that they chose to
represent. Whereas many of
the other cultural displays
seemed to be at the festival
solely for the purpose of
profit, the Icelandic display
told of the pride of a nation.
It was very proud, as was
my friend, Disa.
Next year Disa and I will
be helping Mary, Daie and
their group with the
Icelandic room at the
festival. If there are any
other Icelanders in the
Iowa-Illinois quad cities,
would you plvase call me,
LaDonna Báckmeyer, at
309-788-0141. If I’m not at
home, call Disa Petursdottir
at 309-755-0787. We’d like to
hear from you.
