8-WINNIPEG, FÖSTUDAGUR 24. APRÍL 1981 Vestur-Islendingar gather in Reykjavík Continued from page 3 their music. On this occasion, Jón gave a detailed, interesting and humorous account of their trip, before inviting Sigfús and Guðmund themselves to come forward and perform once again for some American-Icelanders, this time in Iceland! This they did, to the delight of the crowd, and they add- ed a few anecdotes of their own about the journey and their impres- sions of the people and places they encountered in America. These two are well known and well loved musicians here in Iceland, and the songs they played and sang were largely original compositions of Sigfús. All in attendance sincerely enjoyed this performance, and the Vestur-íslendingar were gratified to hear that they had enjoyed their trip west so much. It would be nice to see the instance of sending enter- tainers and ambassadors of this calibre between our nations develop into a regular practise. Hopefully, those choirs and other visitors who intend to travel to Canada or the States this summer will come away with as good an impression and as many good memories as these two men did. When the encores were finished, Unnur Konráðsdóttir stepped up to offer a few words of thanks. She also announced that tickets would be sold for the evening's grand prize, a trip to Toronto, but that in the meantime guests should mingle and get to know one another. This they did, with plenty of good coffee and cakes to help things along, and at 15 new krónur apiece the tickets weren't long in being sold. When the draw was made, it turned out that Asgeir Þorvaldsson was the winner, and it couldn't have hap- pened to a better guy, because Asgeir has been planning to emigrate to Canada for some years now and was intending a trip already. Ásgeir is a brother to Pétur Þorvaldsson, who with his wife Gústa and two daughters had mov- ed to Arborg, Manitoba only a week before. Congratulations to Ásgeir and best of luck to Pétur and Gústa in their new home. All in all, the Þjóðræknisfélag staged a very successful and enter- taining event, and one for which the Öli Kárdal from Gimli in good company. (Photo Þórey Sveinbergsdóttir) Western-Icelanders ‘in attendance were most grateful. All enjoyed the evening's entertainment, and the chance to meet American-Icelandic counterparts and Icelanders alike. The results of this gathering can be summed up as a greater kinship and togetherness for North-American Icelanders in Reykjavík; a friendly Icelandic Content Alma Hansen — a very active member of the Þjóðræknisfélag. (Photo Þórey Sveinbergsdóttir) The editorial A brief history of the First Day of summer celebrations is given. It is shown how this festive day was one of the most unreliable ones in the Icelandic calendar, in that it often failed to usher in spring and sum- mer. Among the Iceíanders it may be compared to some of the ancient divine powers who sometimes in- stilled fear in people and had to be placated at sacrificial feasts. Perhaps our First Day of Summer celebrations reflect some ancient rituals. At any ráte, it was ap- propriate that the Icelanders in North America should continue to regard this day as a suitable occa- sion for feasting. In the late 19th century the First Day of Summer showed its fiercer aspects to the Icelanders for many years in a row and became one of the inimical powers which forced a number of them to move to North America. Icelandic Canadian Frón annual meeting The Icelandic Canadian Frón will hold its Annual Meeting on May 4th 1981 at 8:00 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church. A film will be shown.
