Icelandic Exhibit
A glimpse of Iceland was provided
May 22 at Vancouver's Queen
Elizabeth Theatre by the Icelandic
Canadian Club of B.C. The occasion
was the annual Vancouver Folkfest,
a yearly celebration of the ethnic
variety of Canadians.
On hand to describe and model
the traditional Icelandic women’s
costume was the club's 1982
Princess Kristine Jobin. Other club
members donated examples of
Icelandic culture, handicrafts and
products for the display and helped
answer the questions of visitors at-
tending the multi-cultural gather-
ing.

Rover's Reward
by Del Egilson
It is midnight on the prairie
All the farmyard is asleep
When a coyote starts a yapping
In the pasture 'cross the creek
From the shadows in the gully
Comes the lusty sound of frogs
Where those noisy night time
creatures
Sing so loudly 'mong the logs
Half asleep, but ever watchful,
On the doorstep Rover lies,
One ear lifted, nervous, straining,
Listening to the coyotes' cries.
From the right, and in the distance
Comes a faint but eerie cry
As another hungry coyote
Lifts his nose up to the sky.
Rover bristles for a moment,
Quivering, listening to that sound
Then forgetting sleep and comfort
Leaps the hedge in mighty bound
Hurls himself across the barnyard,
Through the fence and over slough,
Never heeding life or danger
Over hill and field he flew.
Once again the night is pierced
With that ghostly screaming wail
And old Rover much excited
Knows he's hot upon the trail.
Faster, faster, does he scamper
For he knows he now is near
To that chicken pickin' rascal
Whose sharp cries ring out so clear.
Fortune's with him for a moment
As he leaps toward his foe
But alas, the silent laughter
From that coyotes' eyes doth glow
Rover makes a mighty effort
Just to catch that pesky cur
But in less than half a second
He sees nothing but a blur.
There's no rest for poor old Rover
As he races through the night
Towards that streaking grey-like
figure
That will not stand up and fight.
Through the fields of oats and barley
Through the wheat and clover too
Down the hill and through the gully
On and on this couple flew
Nighthawks soaring, swooping,
crying,
In this cool damp evening air
Watch with keen anticipation
The queer antics of this pair.
Rovers' lung are nearly bursting
As he strains to close the gap
And neither dog or coyote
Have the breath to force a yap.
’Round the barn and through the
garden,
Past the house they double back,
And the race is still as silent
As they streak out past the shack.
Down the hill and through the gully,
Now the coyote's far ahead
As he lopes across the prairie
— Poor old Rover's nearly dead.
Back he comes, up to the doorstep,
Very tired, very sad,
As he tries to catch some shut-eye,
With his head down on the pad.
But the morning light comes early
As the rooster starts to crow.
Now it's time to fetch the cattle
— Rover knows he’ll have to go.
Now poor Rover did not notice
What to others may be clear,
While he chased that noisy coyote
Another enemy was near!
On the poles out near the clothesline
Perch the turkeys in the night
And ’neath the poles this cheery
morning
Lies a very messy sight!
Feathers lie in mad confusion
'Round a mass of bones and blood
And you know that some big owl
Never had it quite so good.
Soon the kitchen door is opened,
Breakfast smells now fill the air
And old Rover, being hungry
Is so sure he’ll get his share
But Farmer John looks from the
door,
Sees the feathers lie like fur,
Says, "What kind of watchdog are
you?
You’re just a lazy, low down cur!"
