Arny Magnussonrs
Ninety Years
Left to right: son John Magnusson, Arny Magnusson and daughter
Margretjorgensen.
Ode to Amma:
THE FIRST 90 YEARS . . .
The night was harsh and windswept,
When the family left their home
To carve a way .of living
In a land they'd never known.
Arny was the name of one
Of those who'd just arrived
A pioneer of Canada
In nineteen hundred five.
First she was a Sigurdson,
But then she married John,
And now we call her many names —
Aunty, Amma, Mom.
To each one she is special,
In whatever individual way.
She touched our lives and helped
us grow—
Encouraged us, each day.
Arny has those qualities
Icelanders know too well —
She's generous and loving,
And of course, outspoken as hell.
At least she doesn't write bad poetry,
For that we love her more —
Happy Birthday,
Aunty, Amma, Mom.
You're the Viking we most adore!
Love, Barbie
On the 17th of October an open
house was held at the home of John
and Thora Magnusson of 57 Siddal
Crescent in Winnipeg. It was main-
ly a family gathering to celebrate the
90th birthday of Arny Magnusson a
long time resident of Winnipeg. She
was born in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland
on the llth of November 1892 and
immigrated to Canada with her
parents Gudlaugur and Margret
Sigurdson in 1905, who homestead-
ed and resided in the Lundar district
for many years. She met and married
John Magnusson (Einvardson). He
passed away many years ago leaving
her with two small children, Margret
and John whom she raised herself by
hard work.
It was a pleasant gathering with
lots of pönnukökur, Vinaterta and
other dainties with gallons of coffee,
prepared by her daughter Margret
and daughter-in-law Thora.
Everyone had a very nice time.
Most of Mrs. Magnusson's family
were there including nieces,
nephews and grandchildren. Unfor-
tunately her oldest granddaughter
Barbara Magnusson, who had been
visiting her for several days was not
present. She had been called back to
Hollywood, where she is working on
her second picture this year. Barbara
moved to Hollywood several years
ago after she graduated in Drama
from the University of Winnipeg. She
is a beautifui girl and comes up her
to visit her Amma every chance she
gets. She is very ambitious and a hard
worker, and it would not surprise
any of us if she is headed for
stardom. v
She wrote the following for her
Amma's birthday.
by Gus Sigurdson
Now that you are ninety years of age
— Now that you have turned another page
In the book of life, when you look back
Was it not a long and bitter track?
"No" we hear you gently say and smile,
"Sometimes yes, but only for a whiie,
Mostly always all would turn out fine
And in the end the pleasure all was mine."
Love and kindness is what life's about
And you were always quick to give it out
To anyone who needed your advice —
The wisdom that you gave was always nice.
We gather here from near and far away
Aunty Arny how can we repay
You, dearest, but with happy smiles and cheers
To thank you for your love of ninety years.
Compliments of . .
