How many Icelanders are there in
North America? There is no simple
answer. During the period of
1872-1914, it is estimated that more
than 14,000 Icelanders immigrated to
North America. Most of them were
younger than thirty, often recently
married, or about to. This means that
they must have increased in number
rather fast, but how much is hard to
estimate.
The present writer does not have
the mathematical skills of Jón
Olafsson, who in 1874 wanted Ice-
land depopulated and an Icelandic
State founded in Alaska. Here he ex-
pected the Icelanders to multiply —
in fact he expected them to reach one
million within a few decades. This
means he expected every woman to
give birth to 30-40 a year. The
number of Icelanders in Iceland had
not reached 200,000 as it has nöw, so
Olafsson expected much of every
female.
One of the main reasons it is so
hard to figure out the number of peo-
ple of Icelandic descent in North
America is due to name changes after
marriage. An Icelandic woman mar-
ried to a non-Icelander would take
his name, and so would her children,
even though they remained half
Icelandic. Surveys, conducted by
governments, are often of little help,
as Icelanders are grouped with Scan-
dinavian countries.
