Betel Home Foundation
The Betel Home Foundation has served the needs of senior citizens,
predominantly of lcelandic descent, for over 70 years. Founded on a
commitment to provide care and housing for the elderly, Betel has
developed facilities in Selkirk and Gimli, each housing 94 residents.
An additional 11 suites, known as the Landmark Apartments, were built
in Gimli to house single persons and married couples.
The Betel Home Foundation is also concerned with the mental, social,
emotional, and spiritual health of seniors, offering numerous oppor-
tunities for its residents to help organize and participate in programs
and functions.
It has long been recognized that additional facilities are needed as in-
dicated by the increased demand for housing as well as personal and
extended care beds. Betel Home feels that projects such as Betelstadur
will address this ongoing need.
The Project: Betelstadur
Location: Betel Home’s proposed Senior Citizens’ Home is to be located
on the northeast corner of Erin Street and Sargent Avenue, in Win-
nipeg’s West End.
Phase 1: The First Phase of the project is to consist of a multiple-storey
building housing approximately 80 1- and 2-bedroom apartments. It is
hoped that this phase will be completed by 1987.
Phase 2: The Second Phase of the project will consist of a Personal Care
Facility housing approximately 80 beds located adjacent and connected
to Phase 1. It is hoped that this phase of the development would com-
mence within five years.
Project Objectives:
1. To provide affordable housing for senior citizens.
2. To utilize proposed new provincial programs in orderto provide hous-
ing at the lowest cost to the tenant.
3. If possible, to address the housing needs of seniors in various in-
come groups.

12) Some groups have recently proposed that seniors provide refundable
cash payments which guarantee them accommodation in new housing
projects such as the one proposed by Betel. In the case of Betelstadur,
this payment may also guarantee the residents space in the planned per-
sonal care facility. This would reduce the amount of the borrowed funds
required for the project and also reduce the rents paid by the tenants;
for example a $10,000.00 contribution may reduce the rent by $75.00
to $100 a month.
Would you be interested in such a plan if required to make Betel’s pro-
ject a viable one?
