Kaffi Hús
It was Saturday evening, May 3rd,
at a well-attended gathering in the
Scandinavian Centre that the Icelan-
dic Canadian Frón Chapter of the
Icelandic National League sponsored
a gathering of Icelanders and friends.
The evening was highlighted by a
guest artist — Richard White — who
sang translations of the well known
poet Stephan G. Stephansson set to
music by himself. This entertainment
was well received by the guests pre-
sent as indicated by a hearty and pro-
longed applause.
The name Stephan G. Stephansson
is synonymous with Lögberg-
Heimskríngla. It was Heimskríngla
that first published the verses by this
poet, resident in the lee of the Cana-
dian Rockies. Like so many outstand-
ing poets he was independent in
thought that often expressed itself in
his poetry. This tended to alienate
Lögberg to the delight of Heimskr-
íngla. Howéver, both papers
recognized his great capabilities as a
poet and masterful ability to deal
with emotional thought as well as in-
dependent opinion. It is fitting that
his poetical works have found their
way into a musical setting by
modern-day artists.
After an entertaining performance
by Richard White the guests spent a
pleasant two hours socializing over
coffee and delectable snacks.
On this occasion there were guests
from Iceland, the United States and
the ever-welcome students from
Iceland that bring with them the
warm feelings of our cousins in the
land of our forefathers and help to
bring to our gatherings a strong Ice-
landic flavour.
If you missed Kaffi Hús you missed
a pleasant evening.
