Böðvar Guðmundsson, an Icelan-
dic poet, singer, fiction writer and
dramatist.recently gave an inter-
esting lecture at the University of
Manitoba on modern Icelandic lit-
erature.
He explained how Icelandic
poetry and prose have evolved
through the ages - how they have
been influenced by foreign literary
trends, yet in some ways remain-
ing unique. One of the points he
made was that the ‘magical real-
ism’ which characterizes some of
the popular literature coming out
of Latin America has not influenced
Icelandic writers since that element
has always been a part and parcel
of their writing.
Böðvar, who has lived in Den-
mark for the last five years,

Premier Gary Filmon has recently
opened Manitoba’s new Multicultural
Secretariat office in Winnipeg.
The secretariat and outreach office
was announced by Culture, Heritage
and Recreation Minister Bonnie
Mitchelson in May when Manitoba’s
multicultural policy was introduced.
The office, located in the Power
Building on Portage Avenue, is de-
signed to promote partnerships be-
tween multicultural communities and
in creative writing at the Univer-
sity of Victoria. He explained to
L-H that he had written to the Ice-
the Manitoba government.
“This secretariat is another step in
ensuring that all Manitobans have
access to their govemment,” Filmon
said. “Initiatives like this help our
province enjoy the full measure of what
each of us has to offer.”
“By drawing on staff and resources
from a range of govemment depart-
ments, the secretariat will ensure that
programs affecting our multicultural
communities are well-designed and

delivered,” said Mitchelson, who also
attended the ceremony.
Filmon added that with the secre-
tariat, the three principles of Manito-
ba’s Policy for Multicultural Society
are being realized.
Those principles are: Taking pride
in cultural diversity; providingthe right
of equal access regardless of race, cul-
ture or religion; and fostering part-
nerships between govemment and
multicultural groups.
