Gimli residents and visitors have said farewell to the sailors who
breezed into town for the North American Laser, Laser II
Championships and the Canadian Mistral Nationals.
The severe SE winds were to
their liking and persisted for the 8
practice days prior to the events
but for only 2 days of the July 1-4
time frame. However, the 2 days of
a light breeze and sunshine pre-
sented as much of a challenge as
the high winds.
Approximately 250 sailors from
across Canada, as well as, the
United States and even Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil, took part in these
races. Those who watched from the
shore found a delightful sight of
white and coloured sails against
the eastern horizon.
The Gimli Yacht Club provided
volunteers for the events and in
conjunction with the town
and district will host the World
Board-Sailing Championships,
August 28 - September 5 in 1994.

Dr. Stuart Houston, whose arti-

Order of Merit, Saskatchewan’s highest
award, from Lieutenant-Governor
Sylvia Fedoruk. On 8 March
Lieutenant-Governor Sylvia Fedoruk
and Premier Roy Romanow presented
him with the Canada 125 Medal. On
21 April 1993 he was inducted as an

by Govemor-General Ray Hnatyshyn.
In June 1993 he was presented with the

their four children, three of whom
received their M.D. degree from
Saskatchewan and one his B.A. from
the University of Saskatchewan and his
M.Sc. in Mathematics from Queen’s
University. Stan has served twice in
Africa, in Lesotho for two years and at
the Medical College in Zimbabwe for
three years and is now a specialist in
Infectious Diseases at the University of
Alberta in Edmonton. Margaret is on
staff in Family Practice at the Mayo
Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, with a
Master’s degree in Epidemiology and a
certificate in Preventive Medicine. Don
has a Ph.D. in physiology and is now
the recipient of a Clinician Scientist
Award from the Medical Research
Council of Canada, doing research in
Oklahoma City before returning to
teach haematology at the University of
Manitoba in July 1994, with three quar-
ters of his time protected for research.
David is a computer programmer for
an engineering company in St.
Catherines, Ontario.
Stuart, M.D. Manitoba 1951, is the
son of Clarence J. Houston, M.D.
Manitoba 1926 and Sigriður (Sigga)
Christianson Houston, M.D. Manitoba
1925, both of whom practised medi-
cine in Yorkton from 1928 through
1982. Stuart is a Professor of Medical
Imaging at the University of
Saskatchewan and a radiologist at
Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon.
Stuart credits his Yorkton back-
ground, and especially his scoutmaster
and history teacher, Clive Tallant, for
his interest in history, and the late Mrs.
Isabel M. Priestly for his interest in
ornithology. Yorkton has been well
represented (statistically speaking,
over-represented) in the Officer of the
Order of Canada category: the late
Brigadier General Alex Ross, Reverend
Brother Methodius and George Morris
all achieved this rank. Currently two of
the five Saskatchewan residents who
hold both the O.C. and S.O.M. were
raised in the Yorkton area: Her
Honour Lieutenant-Governor Sylvia
Fedoruk and Stuart Houston.
