munity and to this newspaper. Here
are a few of the comments we have
received recently:
Maria S. Eyolfson of Edmonton,
Alberta, writes us: “Please
renew my subscription for
another year to your most outstanding
newspaper. I enjoy it all from cover to
cover — the anecdotes, poems, news,
articles — and the Icelandic parts that I
am trying to learn to read — not too
successfully I might add. I guess I need
a few summer sessions at June Parker’s
language camp!
Keep up the good work.”.

Hello out there! I am an Icelandic
writer, b. ’60, and I am hoping
to correspond with a West-
Icelander. Please write to:
Jónas Þorbjarnarson
P.O. Box 892
121 Reykjavík.
Iwas surprised to see my note in L-
H, Oct. 27 edition. I did not consid-
er it in that light, else I would have
done other than scrawl — I write so
illegibly it is no wonder my father’s
name became Jón Triggur — instead of
Jón Ttyggvi Bergmann.
No matter! I received a most interest-
ing phone call from Nelson Gerrard of
Arborg who has been compiling infor-
mation on his mother’s family and it
seems his matemal grandmother was the
sister of Anna Egilson who was the first
wife of my father Jón Tiyggvi Bergmann.
I was able to tell him that Anna
Egilsson’s daughter Guðny (Gwen) was
my half-sister and that one of her daugh-
ters lives in Victoria. So I was glad my
scribbled note had been published. In
addition I also had a phone call from
Stan Baldwin and we had a nice chat.
I was also pleased to receive the
address to contact when registering the
names of Western Icelanders. I am
enclosing a list and in deference to your
eyes I am printing it. Wish I had a type-
writer or better still a fax machine.
Sincerely,
Helga Thomson

Hulda Larson wrote to ask us:
“Why is a subscription in
Manitoba more expensive than
the rest of Canada?”
Ed. note: In Canada, subscription
cost is $35.00 An additional $2.45 is
added for GST to equal $37.45. In
Manitoba we must remit funds for
provincial sales tax and, therefore, an
additional 7% or $2.45 is collected to
equal $39.90.

The Fall of a Sparrow
by Kevin Jón Johnson
Change what you can change;
The rest, learn to forget.
The world is vast - most foreign to our
love;
Its sufferings will pass without our
tears,
For only closest sorrows are endeared.
A harmless sparrow in the coming Fall
Departed quickly from its love and life,
A gentle thing not gently indisposed:
For most, its death would not engender
strife.
It earned no tears; their tears already
sold
At immolations .of more kindred souls.
Yet, little sparrow taken in your flight
From liberty in time to timeless death,
Your suppleness distorted in your plight
And feathers moulted with your dying
breath.
My sadness can extend even to you,
Whose Providence is small to human
things.
You were beloved of some, unknown to
most,
Accounted almost nothing but for this,
A testament to your small, awkward
death,
Which passed so quickly, counter to my
wish.
Your song is past; your children may
well starve:
A tragedy so small in one so large.

Regarding funding
Thanks to Kristine Harkness for
her letter (L-H October 27/95)
regarding public funding for
grants to the various ethnic groups. I,
too, agree that Canadian taxpayers
should not have to foot the bill. And
speaking of multiculturism, I person-
ally think the whole department
Smiling Dreams
by Bragi
I hear singing in the mountains
I hear singing in the hills
The songs of golden plovers
The songs of the whip-poor-wills
Come with me to the mountains
Come with me to the hills
Where we will dance and sing
Among the daffodils
The sun is bright on the meadows
There is silver on the bay
Flearts are filled with laughter
It is a glorious day
Come with me to the mountains
Come with me to the hills
Where we will dance and sing
Among the daffodils
There is music on the billows
There is music on the breeze
There is singing in the willows
There is singing in the trees
Come with me to the mountains
Come with me to the hills
Where we will dance and sing
Among the daffodils
You hear the rushing rivers
The murmur of the streams
The earth resounds with music
For smiling eyes with dreams
Come with me to the mountains
Come with me to the hills
Where we will dance and sing
Among the daffodils
We will dance to the thrills
Of the songs in the hilis
The music in the trees
The love songs on the breeze
The earth resounds with music
For smiling eyes with dreams
