Weekend language
experíence — winnersl
by June Parker
Winners were drawn for the raf-
fle sponsored by Norðurljós -
Edmonton Icelandic Society
at their annual meeting on October 29,
1995. The raffle was held to promote
the Icelandic Language Weekend
Experiences and keep the expenses
down to a minimum.
The first prize, hand-quilted blocks
illustrated by members of the Saga
Singers may be considered as an his-
toric quilt as all (we hope) members
who ever sang in this group since its
beginning in the 60’s has his/her name
on it. The winner was Lorraine May of
Calgary. The 2nd prize, a framed origi-
nal oil painting by Geo Zomber was
won by Gene Thorarinson of
Sherwood Park; the $200 cash 3rd
prize winner was Flo McGinnis of
Morinville; and the 4th prize of three
sweatshirts (Land of Ice & Fire) was
won by Ruth MacNaughton of
Edmonton.
A sincere thank you to all who sup-
ported our endeavors by buying tickets.

The following poem has been
translated from Icelandic. It is
based on one of a series of sto-
ries about three brothers and their
father who lived at a remote location
by the ocean. They were considered
to be harmless oafs who continuously
made mistakes. If one said something
then the other two would repeat the

words uttered.
Their names were Gísli, Eiríkur,
and Helgi. It has been known that
their names have been used in vain,
when swear words were not appropri-
ate, as for example if you stubbed your
toe the comment, “Gísli, Eiríkur,
Helgi,” would be deemed satisfactory,
for it satisfied the urge to swear indi-
cating it had been a stupid thing to do
on the part of the individual who
uttered, “Gísli, Eiríkur, Helgi.”
The Riverbank Brothers
A small abode, named Bakki.
A crystal river past there flows,
Herrings small in crevices hide,
White rocks the bottom holds.
Everyday the river flows,
Heartily past their abode.
Continuously through the ages,
Adventure for young and old.
There I heard these stories,
As I listened to the river flow.
Once there lived at Bakki,
A farmer long long ago.
Three sons in total had,
Probably wild and berserky.
Vet harmless oafs, named
Gísli Eiríkur and Helgi.
Not like others were they,
According to descriptions of them.
Many felt they lacked,
Common sense within them.
Some of their unlucky journeys,
Were often childlike.

Much there happened
that was funny,
And entertaining with
delight.
Stricken senseless,
their minds were.
This caused them to
worry. mmmmmmm^^
Vet if common sense had been,
There would be no story.
Better than wisdom deep and wise,
Comments by fools are often accepted.
Good it is to have Bakka brothers,
To laugh at what they concepted.
Those who feel of high esteem,
Would do better in modesty.
Cleverness can be cold,
Causing others to be feisty.
