Manitoba ’s summer festivals are a great way to join friends andfamily across the province in celebrating our proud and diverse heritage. Best wishes, opeiu 342 BILLBOARD THE DEPARTMENT OFICELANDIC The Department of lcelandic Language and Literature at the University of Manitoba is the only degree awarding lcelandic Department in North America. It was founded in 1951 with an endowment created by the lcelandic community as an institutional centre for the preservation and promotion of lcelandic culture in North America through teaching and research. The lcelandic Department offers courses in Modern lcelandic on an annual basis, as well as courses in Norse Mythology and lcelandic Sagas in Translation. Courses in lcelandic History, lcelandic Llterature and Old lcelandic Language and. Llterature are taught on a rotary basis. In addition, the lcelandic Department offers courses in North American-lcelandic Rterature, culture and history. Most of these general courses are taught in English and, apart from personal interest, can be taken for credit towards an Arts degree. They are accessible to anyone through registration with the University of Manitoba Faculty of Arts or the Universit/s Continuing Educatíon Department. Due to the generosity of prominent community members, several scliolarships are available to students in the lcelandic Department Apart from its teaching activities, the Department of lcelandic works to strengthen scholarly publications, notably the lcelandic Studies Series of the University of Manitoba Press, and a guest lecture series on a variety of subjects related to lcelandic studies.
