good text in the Icelandic language.
Many texts are read, mostly from
Icelandic children’s books. I feel that it
provides more entertaining classes as
opposed to reading dry, ready-made
texts as have been provided in special
Icelandic leaming books. As well, there
are also pronunciation exercises in the
computer lab and in speaking classes,
where the students practice speaking
the language and say simple sentences.
The third-year course will have much
more stress on speaking and reading
and less on the grammar.
Each class is 2 x 50 minutes, taught
twice weekly.
Next year’s schedule will be: first
year—Mondays and Wednesdays at
1:00 pm; second-year classes will be
Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1:00 pm;
and third-year—Mondays and
Wednesdays at 3:00 pm.

HEN AMBASSADOR SVAVAR
Gestsson takes up his post in
Sweden, he will not only be responsible
for Sweden, but also for Pakistan,
Bangladesh, Slovinia, Yugoslavia,
Cyprus, Albania and Bulgaria. That’s a
lot of territory to cover! Also, Svavar is
not floating (flýtur) to Sweden as we
headlined in our last issue, but rather
moving (flytur) there! Presumably he
will fly (flýgur).

Hello this is Halli. Does any-
one out there know what a
“Tombola” is? I remember my
parents talking about the Fron Young
People’s Organization in their earlier
days when they came to Seattle. This
was in the twenties and there were a lot
of single men and women who had
immigrated to the Seattle area. All I can
remember is that Tombolas were to
raise money for the club. It was like a
raffle, where you had to bid on pack-
ages, which were big and small, with
numbers on each table. Please let us
know, as I believe this would be a good
money-maker.
I have been reading the articles
about “Fundraising Simplified” by Joan
Eyolfson Cadham from Foam Lake,
SK. This brings back memories of the
Seattle Club’s beginnings in 1967. We
had a small membership to start with
and our first fund raiser was a dance.
We had very little cash. I remember my
wife, who was our cashier, at the door,
collecting the money. She would let us
know how we were doing! I remember
when we had the band paid and the rent
for the Norwegian Hall. This made the
committee breathe easier. We made
money at the bar, which brought our
finances up in good stead. As it turned
out, we had liquor left over. The reason
we were so successful was because of
the location of the hali. It was centered
in the downtown area with good park-
ing. The music was good, and the dance
fioor was always full. The band played
music the people knew and liked. This
was a good start for a young club and
we put money in the bank.
I’m sorry that I have not been in
touch with you as I am the top bottle
washer and cook. I am happy to say that
Rosa is getting stronger every day and
keeps me on my toes. I have been busy
doing the Bardarson family tree for the
Bardarson-Nordal family reunion on
August 4, 5, and 7 at Pincher Creek,
AB.
I was happy to see that you have
Karen’s Kitchen. I send Karen best
wishes—and as I always say, “Home
cooking is the best.” We need a new
broom!

Konan
spurði hann þá um erindið, og hvort
hún gæti ekki afgreitt hann. Þegar
strákur neitaði því, þá segir konan:
“Ég held, að slíkur hnokki, sem þú
ert, hafi ekki mikið að gera í hen-
durnar á manninbm mínum. Eða
getur þú orðið stærri en þú ert nú?"
Strákur sagði það vera. Hún bað
hann að sýna sér það; annars tryði
hún því ekki.
Framhald í næstu blaði.
Once a certain woman sat
working on the raised floor at
the edge of a baðstofa. No
one else was at home on the farm.
The farmer was not at home. He had
gone away, but the farm workers
were outside doing various chores.
Then a boy walked into the baðstofa.
He was not tall, but rather stout. He
asked the woman where the farmer
was, but she was slow to answer; as
she did not like the boy. The boy then
reiterated his quetion, saying that he
had an errand with him, and an
urgent one at that, and that he could
not delay. The woman enquired
about the errand, and whether she
could help him. When the boy said
no to that, the woman said: "I think an
urchin like yourself has little business
with my husband. Or can you make
yourself bigger than you are now?"
The boy said he could. She asked
him to show her, otherwise she would
not believe him.
