Stefán died at sea and Þorbjörg remarried
Jón Guðmundsson (Goodman) after she
and her two daughters settled in Milton,
ND. Bjami was the son of Friðrik and
Mildfríður Bjamason who migrated from
Iceland in 1874, first to Kinmount, then to
Gimli and finally to Milton ND. The fam-
ilies eventually homesteaded near
Wynyard. Helga and Bjami married and
settled on their farm. Their children, Fred
and Runa, were bom in 1908 and 1911.
The family had to move to Blaine, WA for
a short time in 1920 due to Bjami's ill
health, but later retumed to their farm east
of Wynyard. They had a very close,
happy family life with gatherings of
friends and relatives in their home and
always the presence of music.
On April 26, 1933, Runa married the
love of her life, Kris, and except for a
short time in Aldersyde, AB, they spent
all their lives in Wynyard and area. The
family was increased by two with the
birth of their son, Freddie, in 1934 and
daughter, Audrey, in 1941.
Runa was very involved in her com-
munity in various ways. She was a char-
ter member of the Evening Alliance,
Wynyard A1 Anon group, Golden Acres
Auxiliary and, along with Kris, was very
active in the Senior Drop-In Center.
There was always a pot of good
Icelandic coffee brewing and ready for
the many visitors who popped in, and for
the many meetings that were held in
their home. She will certainly be remem-
bered for her years in the Wynyard Rural
Telephone Office when she and Kris ran
the "switchboard." That was one job she
tmly enjoyed.
Runa and Kris enjoyed many visits
to the homes of their children, wherever
they lived, and were able to enjoy many
wonderful vacations out of the country
by way of Fred's association with Air
Canada. They had many happy retire-
ment years together and were able to cel-
ebrate their 50th anniversary with family
and friends before Kris's passing in
1986. After his passing, Runa spent
some memorable years at Maple Grove
Seniors' Enriched housing until such
time as she felt she needed more care,
when she moved to Golden Acres where
she resided in comfort since May, 2000.
Runa passed away peacefully on
November 13, 2001.
She was predeceased by her mother,
father and brother Freddie. Left to cherish
her memory are her children Fred
(Dorothy) Audrey (Dave), Shepherd,
grandchildren Terry (Jeff) Warburton,
Shaun (Jackie) Axdal, David (Roxanne)
Shepherd, Tammi (Terry) Morash,
Kristinn (Lina) Shepherd, great-grandchil-
dren Lacey and Katelyn Shepherd, Alex,
Nathan and Kara Warburton, Noah
Shepherd and Ethan Axdal. A family
graveside service was held at the
Pleasantview Cemetery in Wynyard. That
was followed by "Coffee and
Remembrance" at the Legion Hall, where
the community was able to come and
share many wonderful memories of Runa.

GEYSIR
A homestead on Highway 68 between
Arborg and Hnausa, gave its name to
the entire district when it became the
site of the Geysir Post Office over a
century ago. Originally settled and
named by Bjarni Marteinsson, who
left this location because of persistent
flooding from the nearby Icelandic
River, this land was later homesteaded
by Páll Halldórsson and Jónanna
Jónsdóttir from Reykir in
Skagafjörður, whose son Jón Pálsson,
grandson Jóhannes Pálsson, and great-
grandson Herman Pálsson all lived
here. Today Geysir is owned and
occupied by great-great-grandson Ian
Pálsson and his wife, Mandy.
