and Wynyard, SK respectively.
Tabitha Sopher
Tabitha is enrolled in her
fourth year at the
University of Winnipeg where
she is majoring in forest policy
and management. She is look-
ing forward to challenging the
International Society of
Arboriculture exam and to con-
tinue her activist work on envi-
ronmental issues.
Tabitha also holds a black
belt in Karate and has partici-
pated in a number of touma-
ments. She has volunteered
with inner city schools in
“greening” their school grounds
and raising environmental
awareness among the pupils.
While maintaining a GPA of
3.52 at university, Tabitha also
manages to hold two part time
jobs. She is the daughter of
Michael and Darlyne Sopher
and the granddaughter of Walter
Sopher who was born in
Riverton, MB.

Memorial Scholarship
Erik Dickson
Erik is in his first year at the
University of Winnipeg.
His long-temi goal is to gradu-
ate with a degree in medicine.
Throughout his high school
years, Erik has maintained an
average of over 90% eaming, a
total of 38.5 credits. He has
been a student leader in Nelson
Mclntyre Collegiate working
on committees to raise student
awareness in social issues, from
AIDS to poverty. Erik was a
founding member of the
Healthy School Committee,
which revitalized the students’
recreational facilities. He is a
peer counselor and tutor, a facil-
itator for school administration,
parents, and students, and in his
spare time volunteers working
with children in his church.
Erik enjoys music and has
completed his Grade Seven
honours in piano, taken a lead
role in his school’s musicals,
and was selected for the
Divisional Honour Choir and

Andrea Bertram
Andrea is in her third year
of honours ‘ in
Environmental Science at Trent
University in Ontario. She
serves as residence floor advisor
and takes part in a variety of
athletic activities, among them
alpine ski racing, track and
field, field hockey and physical
training.
She has organized fundrais-
ing breakfasts for the Canadian
Cancer Society, volunteered at
the Pan-Am Games, and
worked on the dikes during the
recent Red River floods.
Andrea received recognition as
a competitor in ski racing at the
Canada Winter Games, and was
recognized for her leadership in
ecological reforestation and her
work as a positive role model as
floor advisor in residence.
Andrea is the daughter of
Christine and Laurence Bertram
of Winnipeg and the
Granddaughter of Helga
Gerrard (Olafson) of Riverton.
John Jonas Gillis
Memorial Scholarship
Colleen Appleyard
Colleen is in her third year of
registered psychiatric
nursing through the distance
education program at Brandon
University. From her home in
Lundar, she has consistently
managed to achieve an excel-
lent academic record with a
GPA of 3.94, while maintaining
a home and family life with her
husband and three children.
Colleen’s volunteer service
has been extended from looking
after the recreational sports of
her hockey playing family, her
presidency of the Swimming
Pool Board, and her work on
the Parent Advisory Council of
Lundar School, to her work at
the personal care home in
Lundar.
Colleen’s parents are
Raymond and Kristin
(Benedictson) Danielson.

Stephanie Prise
Stephanie is in her first year
at the University of Westem
Ontario, where she is enrolled
in the health sciences.
Stephanie is an Ontario scholar
with a high school average of
over 85% in 36 subjects and a
Diploma in French Immersion.
She has worked as a volunteer
with children through her
church and in her community.
She has also worked in a
personal care home, volun-
teered at the local hospital, and
coached soccer.
Stephanie is the daughter of
Joan and Doug Prise. Her
Amma is Norma McEwen
whose father was Sigurdur
Mathews (Metusalemsson)
bom on Birch Island in Lake
Manitoba and who lived rnost
of his life at Oak Point, MB.
