Mixed up in Icelandic Shawn Ross Bryant lives in Iceland. He tries to speak Icelandic all the time and says that it has caused a lot of misunderstanding. “For a long time I thought that landslag (land- scape) meant þjóðsöngur (national anthem (land = nation, lag = song)) and that did not work too well. When I went to Hofsós last sum- mer, the people there said I needed to leam some real Icelandic. One day it was very calm in the Ska- gafjörður and I was told that this was expressed as hland- koppalogn. I have not been able to use the word since. “Last year I went to a Thai restaurant in Reyk- javík. I looked at the menu and ordered something. Then the waitress asked me: “Vr'/fw eitthvað meðlætiT’ (meðlceti = side orders. Að PHOTO: STEINÞÓR GUÐBJARTSSON vera með lœti = to misbe- have.) “£■/• ég með lœtiT I replied. “Nei, ég er hara rólegurT Recently I also created some misunderstanding in a movie theatre. 1 ordered a Coke and they did not have a straw with it. I could not remember the word for a straw and said: “Frtíken, get égfengið slöngu (Miss, can I have a hose)?” Shawn Bryant is a Canadian student at the University oflceland. perfect investment in your heritage...
