Eruption in Grímsvötn, Iceland
For almost a week in the beginning of November, a volcanic eruption occurred in
Grímsvötn at Vatnajökull. It was bigger than the eruption in 1998. An eruption occured
there also in 1934 and 1983.
Time recognizes Icelandic invention
Time magazine selected
Ossur’s high-tech Rheo Knee
as one of the world’s “coolest
inventions” of 2004.
Following the report in
Time on November 22, Ossur
published a press release on its
home page (www.ossur.com).
“The Rheo Knee, an elec-
tronically controlled prosthetic
knee joint featuring artificial
intelligence, represents a revo-

Shawn Ross Bryant lives
in Iceland. He tries to speak
Icelandic all the time and
says that it has caused a lot
of misunderstanding.
“For a long time I
thought that landslag (land-
scape) meant þjóðsöngur
(national anthem (land =
nation, lag = song)) and that
did not work too well. When
I went to Hofsós last sum-
mer, the people there said I
needed to leam some real
Icelandic. One day it was
very calm in the Ska-
gafjörður and I was told that
this was expressed as hland-
koppalogn. I have not been
able to use the word since.
“Last year I went to a

javík. I looked at the menu
and ordered something.
Then the waitress asked me:

some misunderstanding in a
movie theatre. 1 ordered a
Coke and they did not have a
straw with it. I could not
remember the word for a

have a hose)?”
