Summary of the annual report
of the Icelandic Meteorological Office 1984
Sixty and a half personnel positions were occupied during 1984 in the following divi-
sions of the Icelandic Meteorological Office: administration, forecasting telecommunica-
tions.computer, climatological, meteorological research, instrumental, geophysical, avia-
tion observation and sea ice divisions.
The number of stations was as follows: 44 synoptic, 40 climatological and 37 precipita-
tion stations. At 6 of the stations agrometeorological observations were made.
Two summer stations were operated, 2 stations only for observations of wind and 2 for
measurments of duration of bright sunshine.
Weather messages were sent from 60 Icelandic ships. Upper air observations were
made at Keflavík airport at 12 and 24 GMT. The total number of radiosonde observa-
tions (RAOB) was 728 and wind observations (RAWIN) were 725. At the station Irafoss
samples were collected for chemical analysis of some major pollutants in air and
precipitation. Ozone observations were ma'de regularly at Reykjavik. Twelve seismo-
logical stations were operated and 7 borehole strainmeter stations.
Weather reports and forecasts for Iceland and the surrounding sea banks were broad-
cast 9 times daily, and special voice broadcasts on short wave from coastal stations
intended for shipping 4 times daily. Forecasts for the deep sea banks were broadcast in
Morse code in Icelandic and English 4 times in 24 hours. Forecasts with a 48 and 72
hours validity period were issued once a day. Fascimilic synoptic weather maps were
transmitted. Weather maps were presented by a meterorologist in the Icelandic Tele-
vision every operational day.
The monhtly issues of Veðráttan were published for the months January—December
1983 and annuall summary for 1982.
Preliminary Seismogram Readings were issued weekly and sent to subscribers.
