Maritime- and fisheries
school in Paamiut
In August 1986 a new 2 ye-
ars maritime- and fisheries
education was implemented
in Paamiut, Greenland.
This is a broad and precise
education where the stu-
dents get trained to work
both in the Coastal and the
oceangoing fleet.
This education is planned
as a vocational basic educa-
tion in such a way so that
those who are finished will
be qualified for jobs both in
maritime and fisheries sec-
tion in Greenland.
The education within na-
vigation which is integrated
in the maritime- and fisheri-
es education as an indepen-
dent modul I gives futher-
more qualification in Den-
mark. It is therefore in ac-
cordance with the interna-
tional conven- tion.
Futher on the aim of this
education is to give the futu-
re generation of fishermen
partly better and partly mo-
re all-round qualifications
so that they can follow the
global fisheries develop-
ment.
Such efforts can assist
and strengthen the plans of
conti- nious development
within the fisheries and the
fisheries industry requested
by Greenland Home Rule
Government.
The school
The Maritime and Fisheries
School belongs to and is fi-
nanced by the Greenland
Homerule.
The buddings was taken
into use 4-th of September
1982 and the school has a
capacity for 75 students.
The students are educa-
ted by 12 teachers. Several
teachers are just danishspe-
aking and most of the stu-
dents are mainly greenland-
ic speaking.
Because of that the school
employes 3 fulltime transla-
tors, and beside translating
for the danish teachers they
are trans- lating danish text-
books to greenlandic. Today
12-15 danish maritime and
fisheries textbooks have be-
en translated and they are
used for education at the
school.
For training at sea the
school has a 19 feet dinghie
with an outboard-motor and
3 bigger rowing boats. Besi-
de these the school has a
training vessel »NALE-
RAQ«, which is a 36,05 me-
ter and 303 BT and is rigged
as a »singledeck« sterntraw-
ler.
The number of the crew
onboard the training vessel
are 8 persons and 15 stu-
dents and teachers.
The education
Since the Vocational Educa-
tion Board in Greenland ap-
proved the education pro-
gram in 1986 the module-sy-
stem of the educa- tion has
been changed by the branch
commitee of the school once.
Today the module-system
looks as the following:
(Scedule below)
At the end of module III the
students have the possibility
to obtain qualification for
proficienty in sailing and en-
gine main tenan ce, radio cer-
tificate by terminating the
studied subjects.
After the students have fi-
nished the basic education
(module I-III) at school they
are qualified for the period
of practice, which is min. 8
months of duration.
The school gives the stu-
dents a certificate for eveiy
module, they have termina-
ted. At the end of the educa-
tion a certificate for fisheri-
es as- sistant will be issued if
the sailing time (practice pe-
riod) can be documented in
their sailors’ registration
book.
After the education
After the education the skil-
ied fisherman has the oppor-
tunity for working at green-
landic or foreign fishing ves-
sels and trawlers.
Futhermore the fisheries
assistant certificate gives
the opportunity for educa-
tion at the Navigation Scho-
ols in Green- land or Den-
mark.
