2 WHITE FALCON Friday, June 11, 1965 EDITORIAL Our Government Serves Us A government either can be a servant of the people, or their master. Our government, set up under a definitive yet flexible Constitution, is designed primarily to serve us, not to rule us. These were the patriots who proclaimed, in the De- claration of Independence, the self-evident truths that “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. ... ” They weren’t against government, as such. Their dedi- cation to the freedom and dignity of man blended with the political wisdom that said: “... .to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men.... ” And here they inserted the bone, the muscle, the blood, the breath of life, into the concept of the govern- ment they envisioned that would thereafter give hope to freedom-longing people everywhere: The Founding Fathers built upon this foundation our constitutional government designed to serve the people. Under it, Americans have the right to the services of government as a protector and referee. But we retain the freedom from arbitrary government regulation and control. Over the years, countless laws have sprouted out of the main trunk and limbs of our constitutional government. Some have served their purpose and been lopped off. Others have lingered beyond their days of usefulness and withered. Some may be considered necessary, but burden- some. Others, worthless: perhaps unwise. It is part of the genius of the Founding Fathers that they could design an instrument in the Constitution to accommodate the changing role we demand of our servant, This is part of its strength and its durability. And underneath it all, let none forget, still is the voice, the will, the grip on th reins of “We, the people of the United States....” It is we who grant legislative powers to Congress. It is we who vest executive powers in a president. It is we who clothe our courts with judicial powers. And lest these three arms of our government overreach their functions as servants of the people, let us remember that legislators and executives are subject to the ballot box or the machinery of impeachment: that judges serve on “good behavior.” We may be benign, even indulgent masters. But let us no be submissive, for Americans are, and were intended to be, the masters of their political and economic fates under a government that serves... .not rules.” (AFPS) Teacher Tests For Awareness Do you read with your eyes or with your brain? One teacher decided to find out. He told his class that he was go- ind to hand out some papers about their physical well being. Each student was requested to read the paper and then sign it. Out of a class of 42 students, 31 signed the paper. After the papers were collected the teacher read one of them. The paper was a contract stipu- lating that the individual who signed the paper agreed to have his head amputated. Thirty-one of the forty-two students had read with their eyes rather than with their brains. In terms of signing contracts, promissory notes, and other docu- ments the moral remains: read with your brains before you sign. Create in us a new heart that we might live Thy life and love Thy truth. Amen. Read through John 8:39-47. Is Abraham Your Father? The question raised and discussed in this paragraph is that of the paternity of the people of Jerusalem. Jesus has acknowledged their physical descent from Abraham. But their true father, says Jesus, is the devil. The reason for this is that they do not act like Abraham, in faith toward God and his emissaries (See Genesis 18). Rather, they act like the devil, who “was a murderer from the beginning and has nothing to do with the truth.” For the third time (7:19,-8:37, 40) Jesus says to his hearers, “you will kill me.” Their attitude and actions reflect the nature of their true father. The people have murder in their hearts and hatred of the truth. They seek to kill him who was “the way, the truth and the life.” Is God your Father? Here is the contrast of the two fathers: Abraham and the devil. If we live for truth and righteousness, and honor the Prince of life, we are Abraham’s faithful seed, and truly God is our Father. But if we entertain hatred, lies and murder in our hearts, we are children of the devil, and will seek to be rid of the haunting voice of Jesus in our conscience. Who Is Your Father? Who is your father? Whom do you follow? Whom do you act like? Do you find lies easier to speak than truth?
