Residents will see new channels in August

Radio and Television Services (AFRTS)
announce the division of American Forces
Network (AFN) Newsports channel 6 effec-
tive Aug. 7.
The change will result in an all-news
channel (channel 5) and an all-sports chan-
nel (channel 8). The new channels will give
news and sports enthusiasts around-the-
clock programming of either all news or all
sports.
“As long as I’ve been a journalist, those
stationed overseas with me have clamored
for more sports coverage. With the split of
Newsports, it looks like the serious sports
fan will have his or her needs met,” said
Officer-in-Charge, Naval Media Center
Detachment Keflavik, JOC(SW) Patricia F.
Huizinga, Officer-in-Charge. “Keflavik’s
audience has been asking for more news, just
like they had access to back in the states. We
can’t bring them exactly that, but the split
will create an all-news channel. This should
bring them the touch of home they wanted,”
she concluded.
AFN News will offer continuous and com-
prehensive stateside news coverage and
analysis. The expanded services will contin-
ue to offer news from the major networks
and military news sources, but viewers will
also see a variety of new information and
analysis programs not currently offered by
AFN.
To accommodate the new services, some
Keflavik Naval Air Station cable channels
have been realigned and will air on different
stations. AFN channels will be grouped
together and more closely match what is
shown on the AFN program guide, presently
shown on channel 9.
The most notable change is the new loca-
tion of Naval Media Center’s Roller channel,
from channel 4 to channel 9. Newsline will
air on channel 2 instead of channel 5.
“By dividing Newsports into two chan-
nels, AFN has shown its commitment to giv-
ing the best possible variety of television
programming to its customers,” said
Huizinga.
