National Night Out
Preventing crime, promoting safety
By J02 Jean Ross
NAS Security will host the
base’s observance of the 18th
Annual National Night Out 6-8
p.m., Aug. 6 at the Top of the
Rock Club, formerly Coconut
Alley, in conjunction with the
3rd annual Bicycle Rodeo to be
held in the Commissary parking
lot.
Started in 1984 by the
National Association of Town
Watch, National Night Out is a
program geared to generate sup-
port for and participating in
local anti-crime programs.
“National Night Out promotes
drug and crime prevention and
strengthens police-community
relations and camaraderie,” said
YN2 Scott Johnson of NAS
Security.
Currently, NNO is celebrated
worldwide in communities and
military bases. It is usually cele-
brated with block parties, cook-
outs, visits from local police,
contests and youth programs.
NAS Keflavik will have
booths from Security, the Fire
Department, the Icelandic Police
and the Fleet and Family
Support Center, as well as free
refreshments.
Along with crime prevention
and safety information, Security
will also be implementing the
Ident-A-Kid program, according
to Johnson.
This is a driver’s license-sized
card containing a complete phys-
ical description of the child
including photograph and fin-
gerprint. It also contains impor-
tant information about what to
do if your child is missing.
The Bicycle Rodeo helps pro-
mote bicycle safety for children.
Children will navigate an obsta-
cle course with their bike.
If successfully completed,
their names will be entered to
win a free bike. The one rule is
that they must bring their own
safety equipment, such as helmet
and kneepads, said Johnson.
Since National Night out is a
non-profit event, as many volun-
teers as possible are necessary to
make it a success. Johnson said
volunteers are needed for cook-
ing, setting up, break down and
cleaning up.
Donations are also needed for
the prizes at the bicycle rodeo.
“The more money we get in
donations, the more bikes we
can buy to give away at the
rodeo,” said Johnson.

information or to volunteer, call

Hooray for everything...
The Washington Redskins cheerleaders posed with members of
VP-16 during a visit to NAS Keflavik July 20-21. In addition to vis-
iting several commands, the cheerleaders performed and signed
autographs Saturday night. The visit is part of a DoD tour that will
take them to Hungary, Kosovo and Macedonia. (Photo by J02
