Honoring American Women at NASKEF
By J02(SW/A W) Mat Sohl
The base’s Cultural Awareness
Committee sponsored a National
Women’s History Month program
titled “Women Change America”
Saturday, March 19, at Hangar 831.
During the presentation two heroic
local American women, Navy Capt.
Marie Senzig and Air Force Capt. Tiaa
Henderson spoke about the American
women who inspired them as youths
and motivated them throughout their
careers.
Also speaking at the presentation
were A.T. Mahan students, Kaily
Hodges and Sasha Foltynewicz win-
ners of this year’s Cultural Awareness
Committee’s “Women Change
America Essay Contest.”
“Perhaps the most inspiring ele-
ment of this year’s presentation
was the youth involvement,” said
Juanita Lazenby, Cultural Awareness
Committee member and events co-
chairmen. “It was amazing that these
young-women were not only willing
to write these well crafted essays, but
bold enough to read them aloud at a
public presentation.”
It has been 25 years since then
U.S. President Jimmy Carter issued
the first proclamation calling on all
Americans to remember the contribu-
tions of women. Since then five U.S
Presidents have issued similar proc-
lamations about women’s history and
several joint congressional declara-
tions have been made reinforcing the
month’s observation.
This year’s “Women Change
America” theme was set to honor the
role of American women in transform-
ing our nations culture, history and
politics and marks the 85th anniver-
sary of women’s suffrage in America.
What follows are the two award
winning “Women Change America”
essays authored by fifth-grader Kaily
Hodges and eighth-grader Sasha
Foltynewicz. The Cultural Awareness
Committee awarded both young
women $100 U.S. Savings Bond.

There are a lot of women that have
changed America, but I would like
to point out a few individuals that I
have known or learned about in my
life. The first person in my life that
1 would like to point out is my kin-
dergarten teacher. She is one of the
special people who helped me in my
first school years. Yes, I have had a lot
