Kolaportid Flea Market
Story and photos by Jo2(SW/AW) Mat Sold
Where: Located across the street from Laugavegur, the
“Walking Mall,” in the heart of downtown Reykjavik.
What to bring: Kronur and/or your ATM card.
If you’re a treasure tracking thriftologist living at Naval
Air Station Keflavik chances are the U.S. dollar’s current
puny standing has meddled with your off-base bargain
hunts.
There is one North Atlantic location, however, that stands
to meet the demands of Iceland’s knick-knack hagglers and
fresh fish consumers, the Kolaportid Flea Market, located in
downtown Reykjavik, is open every Saturday and Sunday
from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and serves as Iceland’s indoor mar-
ketplace of the bizarre.
A series of permanent and rotating vendors work the mar-
ket, which is located in the city’s old customs building, sell-
ing fish, sporting equipment, military surplus, second-hand
clothing, books, records, cds and a variety of other curios.
The market is open all year and is entirely enclosed from
the Icelandic weather. For more information about the mar-
ket call 562-5030.
