SUMMARY
The present Icelandic study of prevalence of open-
angle galucoma is compared with prevalence studi-
es in Sweden, UK and USA.
Because of methodical differences in the studies
these comparisons must be interpreted with causion.
The results of the Iceland survey are consistent
with the Ferndale, Halsingland and Dalby studies
where primary open-angle glaucoma is defined by
the presence of nerve fiber bundle defects of the
visular fields and/or optic disc cupping after exclu-
ding other possible causes, see table.
The present study is also consistent with the
Framingham eye study. The diagnostic criteria were
the same in both. This study confirms earlier
statement that the prevalence of chronic simple
glaucoma is no greater in Iceland than in the
neighbouring countries (12).
