21st Century
"For the last 50 years, Scranton,
Pa. has been perched atop a furnace —
menaced by underground fires that may
burn for another 50 years," observes
correspondent Walter Cronkite on this
week's 21st Century, 8:30 p.m., August
5. "But, today, scientists can ‘see’
beneath Scranton from satellites in
earth orbit.” This broadcast will
show how hundreds of robot eyes,
camera and sensors mounted in satel-
lites, are constantly monitoring what
goes on back home.
