Civic pride,
^ cornerstone to
r self-help
One of the definitions of the
word "pride” is "pleasure or sat-
isfaction taken in something done
by or belonging to oneself or be-
lieved to reflect credit upon
oneself."
In short, we are talking about
"civic pride", or pride in your
home, your family and your, com-
munity.
What does civic pride have to
do with us here at the naval sta-
tion?
Simply this. If our base is
shabby, run-down and in general
disarray, we are ashamed. If, on
the other hand, the station sports
attractive landscaping, fresh
paint, and just looks generally
nice, we are proud. We are proud
of our base, and what we have
ione for it.
| In the past several months,
trough the self-help program,
he Keflavik naval station has
taken on a brighter look. Not
wanting to slight any one indi-
vidual or group, we will refrain
from mentioning specific projects,
but we are thinking of and thank-
ing all of you who have donated
your efforts and energy to making
the base a "nice place to live."
But the job is far from done.
It is understood we have the ma-
terials and ideas for several
more big projects. All we need
are the talent and help to put
these ideas into practice.
It is easy to sit back and
criticize a dirty, shabby base.
It takes a little courage to stand
up and say, 'AJhat can I do about
it?" It takes some of our spare
time — most of us have plenty
anyway — to help in projects to
beautify the base. It takes
ideas from all of us to get the
projects in motion.
In short, we are looking for
talent, those with time to spare,
and ideas.
Our ideas are the first steps
to getting the job done.

VP-49 crewmen unload the truck carrying clothing to be distributed
to Greenland Eskimos. The clothing was donated over the past year
by Iceland's Seventh Day Adventists. VP-49 has volunteered to fly
the relief supplies to Greenland.
49ers plan charity flight
for Iceland church group
Next week, if VP-49's operation schedule is in order, they will be
making a "charity" flight to Sondrestrom Air Force Base in Greenland.
As a part of their welfare program, the Seventh Day Adventists of
Iceland collect clothing through the year to be donated to the needy
people who live in Godhope, Green-
land, about 100 miles south of
Sondrestrom AFB.
This year VP—49 volunteered to
deliver the clothing to these
people, but when the goods were
delivered to the VP hanger last
week, they found it necessary to
rearrange their delivery plans.
The main reason is because one
flight to Sondrestrom would only
make a dent in the over two tons
of clothing broughtto the hangar.
Yes, 86 large cartons of clothing
for tlie needy. Says VP-49's PAO,
"The deliveries of the clothing
depends on the operation schedule
of the squadron," and he contin-
ued, "Throughout our stay, we're
just going to have to drop some
of the cartons off any time we
happen to lie making a flight that
way, "along with making special
flights to there when we can work
it out."
The Seventh Day Adventists
have nine churches throughout
Iceland with a total of about
1,200 constituents. The church
members collect these clothes for
the people in Greenland through-
out each year, every year.
