A new chess club, the Kingsmen, came
into existance at the end of March. The
club meets every Sunday at the USO in
the music room from 1 to 5 p.m. Anyone
who enjoys playing chess or would like
to learn the game is welcome to attend
the meetings. There is a membership fee
of $2.
There are presently 15 members in the
club. The members are rated according
to their chess playing ability, so you
know if your opponent is a beginner or
an expert.
"Everyone starts with 1,500 points.
Each player plays the other members of
the club twice, once as black and once
as white. The person's rating is calcu-
lated from his wins, losses and ties,"
said David L. Thiss, vice president of
the Kingsmen.
The club has applied for affiliation
with the United States Chess Federation,
a group which sanctions amateur and pro-
fessional chess tournaments, and rates
chess players.
"We have plans for chess tournaments
later when our membershin increases a
little," commented Theiss.
