Chronic tiredness can be relieved at the gym
It's only 4 p.m. and you are so
tired it might as well be midnight.
You can not understand because you
get plenty of rest and eat well too.
You may be a victim of chronic
tiredness. It ranks as one of the
most frequently voiced of all com-
plaints. Although it can stem from
illness, for many people it is the
result of gradual deterioration of
the body due to lack of vigorous
physical activity.
If you would like to start an ear*
ercizing program, the President's
council on Physical Fitness and
Health and the National Jogging A-
ssociation offer these pointers or.
becoming a successful exerciser.
An attractive thing about jogging
is that it's easy to get into. All
you need is a good pair of shoes and
a willing spirit. Start slowly and
build easily. But being easy is not
the only good thing about it.
Jogging is the most effective way
to train the cardiovascular system,
the heart and blood vessels. It
uses the largest muscles in the
body, the leg muscles. This makes
the heart work harder and become
stronger and work more efficiently.
If jogging does not appeal to
you, do not despair there are other
good and interesting sports which
will get you in shape. The Base Gym
offers a variety of stimulating
sport-hobbies you can get into.
The Base gym is open from 8 a.m.
to midnight Monday through Friday.
On Saturday and Sunday it is avail-
able from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Pool
hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and then
6 to 10 p.m. On the weekends it is
open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and then
6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday it opens
earlier at 11 a.m.
Activity is always hopping at the
gym. The gear issue attendent is
kept busy renting out lockers and
issuing racketball, basketballs and
other athletic equipment.
The weight room is clanking and
grunting with hardpushing weight
lifting enthusiasts. They are
sweating and straining, and loving
every minute of it.
In the basketball court there are
six hoops to use and jogging can he
accomplished around the circumfer-
ence of the court. To the side is
gymnastics equipment; mats, uneven
bars, balancing beam, still rings
and even a trampoline. Punching
bags for the boxing enthusiasts are
available and a volleyball net can
be set up as well.
The pool is divided up into three
lanes for swimmers wishing to do
laps, has a diving area and another
more shallow area for casual swim-
ming and floating. All sections an
in full swing with swimmers younj
and old for serious working out oi
just fun and relaxation. Lifeguards
are always on duty to ensure safety
for all.
Rackquetball and handball rooms
richochet with the thunder of two
contestants hammering a small black
ball against four walls, a ceiling
and floor at high speeds.
If you are over 30, check with
your doctor before you start an
exercise program. If you are over
40, have an exercise-stress-test to
make sure you are not one of those
i0-15 percent of the American adult
population with hidden heart
disease.
So start your program slowly and
before long, you will see and feel
the results. Although you will not
have dramatic changes overnight,
gradually you will begin to notice
that you have more energy for daily
activities and you will sleep more
soundly than you have slept for
years.
