The Icelandic Police (IP) have
been stationed on the Keflavik NATO
Base since 1947. Their Chief In-
spector of Police has been a police-
man since 1944, and on the base
since 1947. He is Inspector Bene-
dikt Thorinsson.
"There is an Icelandic jurisdic-
tion here on the base, which was ag-
reed upon when the base was estab-
lished," says the slightly husky
gentleman of almost 60. "There are
34 policemen assigned permanently
here. We work 24 hours a day in
shifts of 12 hours. Shifts consist
of seven or eight men; working four
days on and four off. Stationed at
.both gates, the headquarters station
is located just on this side of the
Njardvik gate," he continued.
Working directly under the Minis-
try of Foreign Affairs, the IP's al-
so work in correlation with the base
Security department in several inci-
dents. Although they look mostly
for traffic violations, or acci-
dents, they are not usually looking
for discrepancies with military ve-
hicles, unless of course their is an
Icelander at the wheel. Otherwise
they are involved with the traffic
no matter if the vehicle is owned by
Icelanders or Americans. Both
carry Icelandic insurance; therefore
all are scrutinized.
When someone is stopped by an IP,
a report is made out on them, If
warranted, and they are taken to the
IP station for further investiga-
tion.
The policemen themselves live off
base; either in Reykjavik, Keflavik,
or surrounding areas. As far as in-
specting each vehicle entering or
leaving the base through both gates;
its random. First of all, according
to Benedikt, "Five to six thousand
pass each gate every day. Most of
the people going through are regu-
lars; because of work, and after so
many trips, the IP's recognize the
vehicles and passengers."
The policemen in Iceland serve
the general public in every way they
can. They are involved to protect
us all.
ALWAYS PAPERWORK—For the Chief Inspector of Icelandic Police, Benedikt
Thorinsson. He has been the top IP here on base for over 30 years. Below,
while taking a break from patroling, other IP's relax in their lounge
within the IP headquarters station. Below right, they can communicate
with other policemen patroling at their command post dispatch. The NATO
Base Security department works along with the IP's at both gates (shown
opposite page), and by patroling the base as well. (Photos by J03 David
