T. Mahan High School
On Friday, April 18, the students
of A. T. Mahan's Industrial Arts and
Home Ecomomics classes took a field
trip to Reykjavik. The group, con-
sisting of 25 students and three
teachers, made several educational
stops on this trip.
The first place visited was the
home of Icelandic president Kristjan
Eldjarn. This house has been the
residence of Icelandic presidents
and other important people since the
time of Danish rule. Students kept
busy photographing the house and
a nearby church.

The students then went to the
SIS, federation of CO-OPS, food pro-
cessing plant. Here they were shown
the process of packaging, canning
and cooling of sausage. Besides the
making of sausage, the plant also
processes pork and makes over 1000
pre-made meals in one small kitchen.
Daily tests are made on the food to
make sure it passes government stan-
dards.
The factory and its distribution
plants employ over 130 people. Af-
ter the tour, the students received
a generous meal of lamb steak, rice
and milk.
The students spent 55
minutes of shopping in Reykjavik be-
fore they went on to a diary distri-
bution plant. The plant distributes
many products such as yogurt and
Icelandic "skyr," but only milk,
sour cream, and ice cream are pro-
cessed at this factory. Farms from
all over the country supply the
plant with fresh milk daily.
The purposes of the trip was for
students to learn about food pro-
cessing and also how industry works.
Students not only learned something
new but had a good time.

Make your vote count
Elections are not decided by the
silent majority but by those who
take an active part in the voting
process.
America's more than 200 years of
democracy testifies to the basic
soundness of our system.
Too often, we forget the system
depends on people at every level of
government. Since only a limited
number can serve in public office at
any given moment, that means other
ways must be used for the rest of us
to make our voices heard.
Time and again, elections have
been won and legislation has been
passed by only a few votes.
Get the facts from your voting
officer today. Make your vote
count.
