Youth Basketball banquet successful
A buffet banquet and an awards
jemony at the Top of the Rock Club
t Saturday evening provided a
tting finale to the Keflavik Youth
Center Youth Basketball season.
Youth Center director, Mrs. Shir-
ley Fierro, opened the festivities
by introducing the Recreation De-
partment director and wife, Mr. and
Mrs. Larusson, and the guest speak-
er, Captain Thomas J. Keene, Com-
manding Officer Naval Station, Kef-
lavik.
Capt. Keene spoke on the history
of basketball in general, and high-
lighted the career of the Harlem
Globetrotters.
Shirley then introduced basket-
ball coordinator Mr. Jim King.
Starting with the Minor League, Jim
called each team to the podium where
the players were presented with med-
als; patterned after Olympic medals
and suspended from a ribbon, the
color of which depicted team stand-
ing, and a Certificate of Achieve-
ment signed by their coach and the
coordinator. The coordinator then
presented each coach with a trophy
on behalf of the Youth Center and
the team.
The Major League players and
coaches were likewise honored, and
the coordinator then called several
players (and their coaches) for pre-
sentation of special awards.
"Most Valuable Player" trophies
were presented to Doug Aurentz (Maj-
or league Knicks/76ers) and Todd
Raines (Minor league Blue Devils)
while the trophies for Most Improved
Player were claimed by Jeff Hiland
(Major league Blazers) and Jeff For-
rester (Minor league Supersonics).
Best Sportsman trophies were a-
warded to Christine Allen (Major
league Hulks) and Shannon Fender
(Minor league Flaming Star). Awards
consisting of special achievement
medals and certificates were awarded

Oliver Gray and Vera Luce have
won the latest no tap bowling tour-
nament .
Sponsored by the Women's Bowling
ciation, Gray topped all men
,shers with a 733 set while Luce
the women with a 650. Both win-
ended only a pin in front of
the second place finishers.
High game honors during the two-
day event went to Chuck Stegall with
a 290 on the men's side with Luce
topping the ladies with a 265.
Millie Fahland was second in the
women's division with a 649 with
Linda Patrizi finishing third at
620. Willa Dugan was fourth with a
604.
Dan Smith had a 732 to grab sec-
ond place in the men's division.
Mike Varney was third at 729, Mike
Luce was fourth with a 710 and Dan
Bushong's 701 was good enough for
fifth.
Rounding out the remaining men
winners, Stegall was sixth with a
693, Jim Kearney was next with a
683, Greg Loos and Bert Quintans
tied a 679, Dennis Lewey has a 671,
Chuck Parker a 667, Tom Andrews a
563 and Phil Blauvelt a 651.
The base golf league begins May
10 with a tournament to establish
handicaps. All rosters are due at
the base gym by Monday. The tourna-
ment on the 10th will begin at 10
a.m. Golf passes are available at
the base gym for the following fees:

A wrestling tournament was held
at the base gym Saturday. It was an
open tournament and all on base were
invited to participate. There is
hope that this was only the first of
more to come. The following people
were the winners in their classes:

Naval Oceanographic Det. 145 lbs.
Steve Alander -
Naval Oceanographic Det. 155 lbs.
Tim Reiner -
Marine Barracks 175 lbs.
Jim Elliott -
Marine Barracks 190 lbs.
In addition to these winners, Pete
Davis of VP-46 was declared a winner
in the 126 lb. class. An opponent
In his own weight class failed to
show, but Pete gave the spectators a
fine show competing with opponents
20 lbs. or more over his own weight
class.
Congratulations to the NATO Men's
Volleyball team! They took first
place in the Northern European Reg-
ional Volleyball Tournament held
last weekend in Edzell, Scotland.
They made a clean sweep of all the
teams with the following scores:

very surprised Jim King with a pla-
que and certificate for his work as
Youth Basketball coordinator.
Following the invocation; given
by Chaplain Benedum, everyone quiet-
ed their appetites over a buffet
dinner of steamboat round, chicken,
ysa, and all the trimmings. The
team mother of each team provided
dessert; in the form of specially
decorated cakes, and a good time was
had by all.
The coordinator wishes to express
his appreciation to the parents,
players, coaches, the officials of
the Keflavik Sports Officials Assoc-
iation, and especially the cheer-
leaders of the various teams; for
the outstanding support and assist-
ance they provided him this season -

The gym is taking applications
for clerk-typist, gym attendent and
student-hire field crew now. Call

the gym.
The base pool will be closed Sun-
day from 5 to 6 p.m.
The base gym is looking for qual-
ified Water Safety Instructors to
teach swimming this summer. Contact
the base gym at 4588.
School is coming to a close and
the summer is almost here. The base
gym is looking for an individual who
would like to be Coordinator for the
Summer Youth Program. Contact Deb-
bie at 4588.
Registration for beginning gym-
nastics starts May 12 at the base
gym. Classes will begin May 17 and
run for four weeks. Fee is $4. Call
4588.
The base gym is looking for an
instructor for advanced gymnastics.

terested.
Registration for adult swimming
lessons will begin Monday.
There will be a meeting next Fri-
day from 5 to 6 p.m. at the base
pool for all adults interested in
taking swimming lessons. Call 4588.
