Boxing
The vacant U.S. Boxing Association
Middleweight Championship has been
filled. Frank "the Animal" Fletcher
of Philadelphia won it by pounding
out a unanimous ten-round decision
over Norberto Sabater.
With the victory in Atlantic
City, New Jersey Sunday, Fletcher
boosted his record to 12-2-1. The
27-year-old southpaw is ranked
eighth in the world by "ring" maga-
zine.
Sabater is 19-1. The 23-year-old
Brooklyn, New York middleweight is
ranked eighth by the World Boxing
Association.
The Fletcher-Sabater bout became
a USBA title fight after Curtis
Parker of Philadelphia was stripped
of his title for failing to defend
the crown since May, 1980. The
rules call for a fighter to defend
his title at least every six months.
Golf
At 38 years old, Ray Floyd is
•ying the greatest year of his
on the pro golf tour, and Sunday
was no exception at Harrison, New
York.
Floyd sank a three-foot birdie
putt on the 17th hole for a two-under
par 69, giving him a two-shot vic-
tory over Craig Stadler, Bobby Clam-
pett and Gibby Gilbert in the
$400,000 Westchester Golf Classic.
The $72,000 first prize boosted
Floyd's 1981 winnings to more than
$500,000, including a $250,000 bonus
he got for winning two Florida
tourneys back to back.
Floyd finished with a nine-under
par 275. Stadler shot a 70 in the
final round, Gilbert had a 72 and
Clampett a 68 to tie for second at
277. George Burns, with a brilliant
65, moved into fifth place at 279
while Tom Kite finished tied with
Leonard Thompson, Ron Streck and
Lee Elder at 280.
Auto racing
Belgium's Jacky Ickx came out of
retirement to compete in this year's
24-hour road race at Le Mans, France.
And when the checkered flag fell, it
seemed the veteran driver had never
been away.
Ickx and his partner Derek Bell
of Britain captured the 49th running
the classic with an average speed
124.94 miles an hour. For Ickx
"it was a record fifth win at Le
Mans. The French crew of Jacky
Haran, Jean Louis Schlesser and
Philippe Streiff came in second.
SHORT SHOTS
Ickx' victory was marred by fatal
accidents during the early part of
the race Saturday. Veteran French
Driver Jean-Louis Lafosse and a race
marshall were killed.

title at a Legends of Tennis tourney
in Sacremento, California. Rose-
wall earned first-place honors by
defeating Tom Okker 6-3, 6-2 in
Sunday's finals. In doubles action,
Fred Stolle and Owen Davidson beat
Cliff Drysdale and Roger Taylor 6-3,
4-6, 7-5.' The tourney was for
payers over 35.
Track & field
Cuba's heralded invasion of the
United States with its brightest
track stars turned into a flop over
the weekend at the Brooks Track Meet
in Berkeley.
Roberto Jauntorena and Silvio
Leonard, heroes of Cuba's track
forces, did not perform up to their
past standards.
In Jauntorena's case, the best
were Willie Smith and Tony Darden,
and he didn't even come close'to
threatening either in the 400 run.
Smith won the event in 45.65 with
Darden second in 46.40 and Eugene
Sanders third in 46.57. Jauntorena,
who scored one of the biggest doubles
in Olympic History in 1976 at Mon-
treal when he won the 400 and 800,
finished sixth in 47.34.
Leonard, the silver medalist at
Moscow in the 100, finished third
Saturday behind Ron Brown and Emmitt
King, and third again in the 200
behind Mark Kent and Tim Foster.
