Satellite facility
dismantled
For the past several weeks workers
have been disassembling the "old"
satellite earth terminal, located
near the Navy Communication Station
on the NATO Base. The facility,
which was activated on April 1,
1979, was taken off line in early
September this year.
The older facility was replaced,
in late July, by the new NATO SATCOM
facility, located behind the NATO
Base Chapel. The $10-mi11ion site
incorporates the most modern state-
of-the-art equipment available to-
day. The entire system is control-
led by computers and all operating
systems can be monitored from a main
control console. Any malfunction in
the system is detected by the com-
puter which alerts an operator and
indicates the steps required to sol-
ve the problem. The primary mission
of the facility is to provide com-
munications support to NATO.
