Where do you go when you first arrive in
Iceland and have no place to stay? You can
enjoy a clean room with maid service, color
TV and kitchens at a minimum cost at the
Navy Lodge.
The main function of the Navy Lodge is to
provide service to personnel on PCS orders
who are accompanied by their dependents
with a temporary place to live while locat-
ing or vacating a permanent residence, no-
tes Paul Shaffer, the Navy Lodge manager.
Other active duty military personnel,
both foreign and U.S. and retirees, may be
accommodated on a space-available basis.
Reservations for rooms can be made for
PCS personnel up to 90 days in advance.
Others wishing to use the facility can re-
serve rooms up to 21 days in advance. As-
signments other than FCS can be pre-empted
by PCS personnel. Therefore, accommodations
are not guaranteed unless you are in a PCS
status.
"During the summer months, the lodge ex-
periences a heavy demand by PCS personnel,"
explains Paul Shaffer. "During that time
personnel other than PCS may find it diffi-
cult to obtain reservations. In that case,
you may continue to inquire up until the
day you wish to check in. Occasionally we
will have cancellations, early checkouts or
'no shows,' which may open up a few reser-
vations. However, there are no set guar-
antees, and back-up arrangements should be
considered."
The usual stay in the lodge is 10-15
days, with the opportunity to extend reser-
vations on a case-by-case basis for up to
30 days based on the availability of rooms.
For people who need a room longer than 30
days, they must submit a written request to
the Naval Station commanding officer. Re-
quests for rooms for the winter months are
much easier to obtain.
Check-out time is no later than 12 p.m.
daily. Late check-outs are charged one-
half of a day's rate until 5 p.m. and the
full rate after that time. Late check-outs
may be granted by management only if the
demand for rooms permit. When checking out,
please see that your key is turned in and
your bill is paid.
"All patrons are required to pay their
bill by check-out. Management reserves the
right to alert guests whose accounts appear
to be out of proportion, and we recommend
that you apply payments toward your bill
every five days. Guests who have made ad-
vance payments must notify the front desk
