Bergsson Mathús
Offering an electric selection of fresh and
healthy flavours, this new addition to casual
downtown dining prides itself on the use of
local and seasonal produce. From their ingre-
dient list they turn out Middle Eastern, Soul
Food, vegetarian and vegan dishes that are
perfect when you need more than a snack,
but less than a full horse.
Templararsund 3
Café Haiti
Nestled in one of the former fishing
warehouses of the old harbour, Café Haiti
is surely one of Reykjavík's best cafés (and
this is no mean feat, as the city has some
nice coffee on offer). Go there for an excel-
lent cup and some delicious light snacks
during the day, or indulge in beer and low-
key concerts at night.
Geirsgata 7b / Verbúð 2
6 Stofan
Voted the best place to read a book in the
Grapevine Best of Reykjavík 2012 awards, this
old-timey coffee house is something straight
out of a Carl Larsson painting. A perfect place
to spend the day sitting on their antique
furniture and sipping delicious drinks, both
alcoholic and otherwise.
Vesturgata 3
8 Mengi
Mengi (“Set”) was born as a place to host
intimate shows where the artist gets to
perform in front of small crowds. Hosting
anything from art performances, lectures
and workshops to music gigs, Mengi snugly
seats 50 people. Admission is generally
2,000 ISK, but guests are free to bring their
own drinks.
Óðinsgata 2
9Prikið
Prikið is one of those places that shape-shifts.
It’s a warm café lined with photographs of its
senior frequenters on weekdays, a hung-over
hangout on weekend afternoons, and during
nights it’s filled to the brim with what remains
of Iceland’s hip hop scene. Go there in the
daytime for the cheap burgers; enter at night
for some OTT hip-hop debauchery, old skool
and the latest bangers alike.

The University of Iceland’s newly built student
lounge has quickly become the place to be
on campus. They boast a solid menu of tasty
and inexpensive pub-grub, a nice selection of
drinks and beers on tap to help unwind after
classes, and regularly host concerts to help
you rock out with your meal.

Hamborgarafabrikkan
Reykjavík’s premier burger ‘factory’ offers up
some of the fanciest and craziest burgers in
town. The restaurant, owned and operated by
two local TV celebs, pulls off some adventur-
ous takes on the classic meat-and-buns.
Check out the ‘Lamburger’ and that
crazy chicken breast thing.

Hressó
Hressó is spacious neutral place with no
particular type of clientele, so it’s perfect
for lounging. Their menu spans a variety of
lunch dishes during the day and troubadours
and tap-beer are the order of the night. A
somewhat basic club during weekends, it is
notable for its size and amount of seats, as
well as a most excellent smoking area.
