Nominated CNO talks about job
New-nominated Chief of Naval
Operations Admiral Carlisle A.
H. Trost, Commander-In-Chief,
U.S. Atlantic Fleet, said in an
interview June 2 that being nom-
inated CNO was a “feeling of
tremendous satisfaction."
Trost said his professional
performance over the years has
been good enough to give him the
background which enabled him to
be selected for CNO.
“I've faced challenges in the
past, but being CNO for the next
four years will be the greatest
challenge of my career," he said.
Talking about the average sailor,
Trost said, “The way they feel
about me will depend on how well
I perform.' the admiral said he's
a strong believer that people
come first and that we're not
ready — unless our people are
ready.
Trost believes the American
sailor today is of better quality
than in the past and that the Navy
has good leadership at the officer
and petty officer level.
He recently spoke with sailors
who were on an extended
deployment and found them to be
pleased with their performance.
“They feel proud of themselves.
That's what we're all about —
they do a professional job and
they're proud of doing it.”
The future CNO concluded the
interview, "I’m looking forward to
a challenging four years. I
suspect I'll develop some more
gray hairs by the end of it and the
frustrations sometimes will out-
weigh the satisfaction: but in the
long run, I expect the satisfaction
of leading the best Navy in the
world to be overwhelming."

The Land of Youth
A Land of Love
We know of a land not
far away,
Where flowers bloom
and lovers stray,
Where grass is green
and the air smells
sweet,
and the clouds look
like dreams swirled
into summer heat.
Where is this land,
this Land of Youth?
It s hard to say, to
speak the truth,
Is it over the bounding
and restless sea?
Behind a rock,
perhaps a tree?
A Land of Question, is
what it is,
it's not just yours or
mine or even his,
It's in our minds and
in my heart and
lovers who go there
will never part.
Time will pass and
love will stay,
Rainbows appear in a
dazzling array,
They're symbols that
say to and me,
’We are free, to love
for eternity.*
