In and about Iceland

Iceland is a great place for those of us who like
to eat fish and other sea food. All Icelandic
restaurants from the simplest to the finest serve
excellent fish dishes. Of course you can also buy
and prepare the food yourself. If you've hesitated
to do so because you don't know what to ask for,
here's some information the U.S. Embassy
distributed to its employees.
Haddock - Ysa
Haddock fillet smoked- Reykt ysuflak
Haddock fillets - Ysuflok
Ocean Perch - Karfi (usually filleted and
prepared fried or grilled)
Catfish (Rock Salmon) - Steinbitur (good in
Spring or Summer, fried or boiled)
Shrimp - Raekja (sold canned or by the pound in
supermarkets)
Lobster - Humar
Scallops - Horpudiskur
Trout - Silungur
Capelin - Lodna (Season starts in Jan. and Feb.
and quite reasonably priced, good fried.)
Herring - Sild (Available in the supermarkets
and always available marinated in sauces.)
Cod - Thorskur
Cod fillets - Thorskflok
Ocean Perch smoked - Reyktur karfi
(prepared boiled or steamed)
Halibut - Lutha. (This fish comes very large or

in smaller pieces. It's good fried, steamed or cold
with hollandaise.)
Salmon - Lax (Fresh in Summer, frozen at other
times and alway available smoked.)
Plaice - Raudspretta
Lemon Sole - Koli (Ask the fisherman to fillet
them for you then scrape the skins before frying or
steaming.)
