Now is the time to study for upcoming exams By PNl Dar Lathrop The September Navy-Wide Advancement Examination is just around the corner, and now is the time to begin preparations for your move up the ladder. The following are general requirements for exam participation: ■/Must have sufficient time in rate for your paygrade as of Jan. 1, 1987 VComplete the Military Requirements for your paygrade as well as the professional course for rating (waived for E-4 if you're an "A" School graduate) VComplete your PARS. VSuccessful participation in the Military Leadership exam and be recommended for advancement by your commanding officer Though not included in the Navy-Wide Exam, which is geared toward professional criteria, the Military Requirements.course is a prerequisite that provides for growth in military skills and knowledge. Based on this course, the Military Leadership Exam is offered monthly by the Educational Services Office. Only two more leadership exams remain before the September exam. The E-4 and E-5 exams will be administered on July 9 and Aug. 13 and the E-6 and E-7 exams on July 10 and Aug. M. Your Rate Training Manual (RTM) is the cornerstone for your study program and contains valuable information that will help you fulfill the requirements or your rating. It's more than just a course you "have to do” to take the exam. Designed for individual study, it provides subject matter that relates directly to your occupation area. A word Chapel of Light wins |UUu,mll| structural i D E The architects of the Chapel of Light have won an award for the "exceptional design" of the building. The award was donated by the Tidewater chapter of the American Institute of Architects in Norfolk, Va. As reported in The Virginia Pilot, a panel gave awards for 10 designs from among 40 that were entered. Eligible were projects that were designed by licensed architects completed since January 1980. The Chapel of Light architects, Walsh/Ashe Associates Inc., of Virginia Beach, Virginia, won two awards. The judges said of The Chapel of Light, which was completed in Dec. 1983, "it was an exceptional design, not only because it solved the problem of creating a religious structure with non-denominational symbolism, but also because it delt with the design with tremendous simplicity." of advice: When studying the RTM, don't focus only on the questions and answers. These are designed to guide you through the course. The entire manual is testable so study it in its entirety. If the RTM is the foundation for your study program, the Bibliography for Advancement Study is its completed framework. This useful, yet often neglected, pamphlet lists required and recommended reading, and outlines the publications and references used to write the advancement examination. Bibliographies for Advancement Study are available at PSD's Educational Service Office. A well-rounded knowledge of your rate, proper preparation, and a good night's sleep beforehand are keys to successful participation in the Navy-Wide Exam. For further information, please contact Educational Services Officer, PNl Dar Lathrop, at 7423. Don't watt until the last minute to "cram" for your exam start preparing now. Put it where it belongs. 8 Photo by J02 Ed Baker The White Falcon June 20, 1986
