Vol. 26 No. 40 NATO Base, Keflavik, Iceland November 7, 1936
On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 1 1th month
in 1918, an armistice signed by representatives of
the Allies and Germany went into effect, ending
World War I. A year later, President Woodrow
Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 Armistice Day.
“To us in America,' Wilson said, “the reflections
of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in
the heroism of those who died in the country's
service and with gratitude for the victory, both
because of the thing from which it has freed us and
because of the opportunity it has given America to
show her sympathy with peace and justice in the
councils of the nations."
Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to
honor veterans of World War I, but after American
forces had fought in World War II and the Korean
conflict, it was designated Veterans Day by an act
of Congress on June 1, 1954.
In October of that year, President Dwight D.
Eisenhower issued a "Veterans Day Proclamation,"
and Nov. 11 became a day to honor American
veterans of all wars.

DOD increases overseas tour lenghts
by P.J. Budahn
Air Force Times Staff Writer
The Defense Department has increased tour
lengths in 28 overseas locations. The change took
effect Oct. 1, with DoD leaving the implementation
to the services.
DoD officials say they expect the longer tours
will apply to people leaving the States after Oct. 1,
although the services have the option to make those
already at the 28 sites stay longer.
The longer tours end a year-long DoD effort,
begun under pressure from Congress, to survey all
overseas installations that are exceptions to the
so-called "36-24 rule." That is the long-standing
policy that makes people who are accompanied by
their families overseas serve 36 months, while
military people without family members serve 24
months.
The new DoD tour-length change also will
increase assignments in 10 other locations,
although the change will bring those tours short of
the 36-24 rule.
Those 10 sites and the new accompanied-
unaccompanied tour lengths are: Andros Island,
Bahamas, 24-36; Florennes, AB, 24-12; Keflavik
Naval Station, Iceland, 30-18; Comiso AS, Italy,
24-12; Ascension Island, 24-12; La Maddalena,
Italy, 24-24; Amman, Jordan, 24-18; Liberia,
24-18; El Ferrol, Spain, 24-24 and Tunisia, 24-18.
Included in the tour changes is a two-year test of
longer tours on Guam for Navy members who will
switch to the 36-24 policy. They currently serve 24
months on accompanied and 15 months on
unaccompanied tours.
With the tour-length changes, 99 locations are
