Keeping the recycling clean “Recycling is practically a public service,” said Hallddrsson with a smile, “or at least a service to the environment. In order to turn a profit, though, we can’t be expected to pay much for our raw material. In ition, we have also made sure that we won’t be doing more harm good by pouring out a lot of poisonous smoke into the atmos- »» ere. A separate building, attached to the main plant by huge pipes, houses the system of filters used to purify the air. Halldorsson pointed out that one of the pipes carried gases drawn from the furnace itself, through a special intake at the top of the huge, enclosed melting bucket. The system of water-cooled pipes conveys the polluted air from the August 10,1990 tnou m plant into the huge filtering system, which is powerful enough to change completely the air in the plant, some 70,000 cubic meters, eight times every hour. Tests carried out on the air pumped out after filtering when the plant was in use in France had shown, said Hallddrsson, that it was well within the required maximum of 100 mg of foreign material per cubic meter. Marketing the steel was no problem, he maintained. “There is already high demand for recycled steel of this sort, and if development begins to accelerate in Eastern Europe, as many economists predict, there will be plenty of steel needed for building in the future.” At present, though, the struggle was primarily to get production going so that the long construction period and high investment could produce results. Surveying blueprints on the drawing board was one thing, Hallddrsson maintained, but the real satisfaction came from actually seeing the plant in operation and turning out its finished product. 11
