Air Forces Iceland personnel score high for E-9
By J03 (SW) Andreas Walter
There were 4,700 eligible service mem-
bers, Air Force wide, for the 1993 Chief
Master Sergeant (E-9) advancement cycle;,
only 442 or 9.4 percent were selected. Lo-
cally, Air Forces Iceland tAFI) had 24 eli-
gible senior master sergeants, of which 5
were selected. This represents a 20.8 percent
selection rate.
The E-9 promotion cycle is unique in that
it focuses on two areas, objective and subjec-
tive. The objective area includes time in
grade and service, decorations and perform-
Mce reports. The subjective level brings the
■vice records of the eligible personnel be-
Rre a board. Based on the scoring here, the
actual personnel selected meet a quota level
established by the Air Force.
CMSgt. Charles R. George, Chief of Infor-
mationManagement,4557thMSS said,“The
£-9 cycle is similar to the previous ones. The
main differences are in number changes to
your records and additional education points
such as college. The quota for AFI was
actually less this year than for the previous
year, yet more were selected.”
As numbers of personnel in the military
dwindle to meet the needs of a downsizing
government, the pressure of performing above
average rises.
CMSgt. Stephen A. Smith, Assistant
Deputy Commander of Main tan ance, 56th
Rescue Squadron, commented on the tighter
competition. “With fewer personnel in the
military this year, the Air Force has man-
dated that only one percent of its manpower
can be in the E-9 position.” Smith added that
making E-9 has been his personal goal since
joining the Air Force 19 years ago.
CMSgt. Dan G. Godwin, Superintendent
of Comptroller Division, AFI said, “Since
this exam is a yearly occurance, I didn’t find
it to be any tougher than prior ones. It’s just
the reduced personnel strength and therefore
stronger competition that makes the advance-
ment cycle a test of personal achievement.”
Godwin added that the E-9 exam is a test of
subjectivity, with low and high {joints of 270
and 450 respectively. “In the end, the board
looks at your overall picture, your job knowl-
edge and skills. The Air Force also stresses
that a selectee have at least an associate’s
degree in line with his or job skill.”
